OK... kind of a left-field question... but a thought occurred to me the other day while I was training 12-point strikes on a heavy-bag... While practicing double stick striking on a heavy-bag... I became aware of the rhythm of the strikes, and wondered if there was a musical link that could help in my training...

So, are there traditional (or non-traditional) Filipino songs that are suitable for playing during FMA training? Specifically, I'm looking for a song(s) that I can play while I work on striking and flow routines…

Thanks in advance!

Best Regards,

Andy

Certainly, FMA is often worked into dances or other performances in the Philippines...I know there are some links to specific performances in the News section.

Many southern tribes play the gong. There were a series of world music releases that included gong music from Lanao. I don't know if it is still available. However, there are contemporary musicians such as Eleanor Academia and the Kulintang Insititute. I believe she still has a website that you can order cd's. This is what many use for various rhythm.

You can also use Kodo-Japanese Percussion and American Indian tracks which are easier to obtain.

Here's Eleanor's website

Cass Magda usually has some of her work for sale at his seminars as well.

I think the last seminar I attended he was selling his wife's CD for like $2 or something outrageously underpriced like that. Interestingly, Sifu Cass runs his iPod during the whole seminar shutting it down to indicate breakes where he wants to teach something new or clarify a techniques. His taste is quite eclectic. Anything from James Brown to the Spin Doctors to Rob Zombie. For me it actually made the learning process easier.

Any music with a beat that is active and ALIVE will help. I use whatever works whether it's traditional, rock, techno, and sometimes even certain rap tunes. The video link below is one example.
