Publicity stills have been released for the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid.
Spawn from box-office royalty, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, 11 year-old Jaden Smith will portray an analogous character to the bullied teen played by Ralph Macchio in the 1984 original film. (As well as its two proper sequels.) Legend of unsynchronized dialogue dubbing-turned icon of American cinema, Jackie Chan will portray his Mr. Miyagi-type mentor.
This time, however, the film will take place in Beijing, China, as Jaden's character, Dre, will be forced to adapt to life after a job has brought his single mother to the far east. (As opposed to Reseda, Los Angeles in the original.) He gets bullied by some mean little ruffians who are probably bigger than him, and of course, know karate. What is he to do? Find the nearest unassuming janitor/workman and assume that even HE know some karate to teach. (In the spirit of keeping Asian stereotypes in full proliferation. Rock on!)
The pics seem to reveal that, besides the obvious father/son relationship between mentor and student, there is also a parallel play between events from the original film and this (still unthinkable) incarnation. For example, this pic (http://movies.yahoo.com/photos/moviestills/gallery/2223/the-karate-kid-stills#photo2) with Dre and (we assume) his girlfriend seems to echo the date between Daniel and girlfriend, Ali at the amusement park. (A relationship, which in the original film, was the catalyst for his issues with the bullies.)
Also of note, is a picture of Jaden displaying impressive flexibility (http://movies.yahoo.com/photos/moviestills/gallery/2223/the-karate-kid-stills#photo0) in an extremely high roundhouse kick that would even make Jean-Claude Van Damme grab his crotch in phantom pains. Like the remake or not, you have to give the kid his due on that one.
I still don't know what to make of this film. However, I for one, am finished with the "stop raping my childhood" pleas. At this point, I merely take these remakes/reboots as a testament to the venerability and influence that the 80's still has on popular culture. I have my Karate Kid DVD's to watch at home, and as far as I can see, Daniel remains un-raped.
Take a look at the full gallery of pics (http://movies.yahoo.com/photos/moviestills/gallery/2223/the-karate-kid-stills), if it interests you. (Well, even if it doesn't.)
The Karate Kid is set for release on June 11, 2010.
