The IMAFP (http://www.imafp.com) appears to be doing a good job of spreading the art! From the current issue of FMA Digest (http://www.fmadigest.com):
IMAFP continues to grow. Since its inception in 2001, it has grown to its current sizeable membership spread throughout the islands. Here is but a partial list of IMAFP chapters and affiliate clubs in the Philippines:
Metro Manila: 26 Chapters
Luzon: 3 chapters in Baguio City, 2 in Meycauayan, and 8 in Cavite
Visayas: 6 chapters in Iloilo, 1 in Cebu City, 3 in Bacolod City, 2 in Hinigaran
Mindanao: 3 chapters in Zamboanga, 2 in Davao, 2 in Koronadal
This data does not take into account the huge numbers of Philippine schools, colleges and universities, which now teach arnis as part of their physical education curriculum. In Metro Manila, 38 schools/colleges/universities already implement regular training programs in Modern Arnis, with estimated total of 40,000 students.
There are also international affiliates. I think this is great! I'd be curious to know more about the curriculum and how it differs from what we saw here in the U.S., and how far the training in schools goes. Here you couldn't teach knife in a high school--is it different in the Phil.?

Here in Germany we have the Knife at Blue-Belt Level (White, Yelow, Green, Blue, Brown, Lakan/Dayang) in our Curriculum.
I am not sure if it helps, but our Curriculum can be found at:
www.modern-arnis.de (http://www.modern-arnis.de) (klick the Button "prüfungsprogramm") unfortunately its only available in german...

Here in the Philippines, obviously the most known style of arnis is the modern arnis. Educational institutions accepted the modern arnis as part of physical education because of its simplicity to incorporate with the dynamics of physical education, and as well as sport competition which chracterize by real stick fighting but at the same time safe and orderly conducted. Thanks to Prof. Armando Soteco and to the Association of Sports Arnis for their effort in propagating arnis as part of PE and school sports competition.
Modern Arnis, particularly here in Philippines have different system of training and focus. Some group concentrating in its combative nature, others on its competitive aspect. Some group giving much time in cultural presentation of arnis as Philippine art. But all of these groups (i.e. Kombatan, Dulay group, Nicolas group, PUP group, Soteco/Anajao group, Dagooc, Robas, Dela Cruz group, etc.) are belong to the lineage of Presas.

This is great to hear, because with his passing we often wodner about the future of the art and of his legacy. This sounds very encouraging!

To me it also seems to be very encouraging to hear that Mondern Arnis is diversifying to fit a lot of interests. May the Professor's legacy live on in many ways.

By the way, the Association of Sports Arnis Pilipinas, a group of modern arnis practitioners propagating sports aspect of stick fighting is currently conducting seminars in many univerisities and colleges. And about to formally launch its book on sports arnis, published by the ASAP and collaborately written by Joel Anajao and Ariel Ramos. You can visit www.geocities.com/sportsarnis (http://www.geocities.com/sportsarnis). Hopefully they can make this a permanent website.
