Self defense (SD) comes to me in several different perceptions. Reality of self defense is it's ugly. It's surprise, it's reactionary, and it's intense.
By being taught early on in your training being aware of your surroundings, and noticing the unoticable you'll learn to be and stay one step ahead of the problem if or when it occurs.
The main goal of SD is to "Never put yourself in a situation your going to need to defend yourself physically."
In reguards to the truth of a good martial artist is to always be prepared even if the action never arises.

Yes sir..rather have it and not need it..than need it and not have it...i hate the word self-defense though, it is weak by nature.

I was /am rather fond of the term "Self-Offense" which was coined at a Wing Tsun gym I was training at a few years back (how time flies).
I don't think "Self-Defense" broken down into a series of techniques work. If you let somebody come into a range where they can headbutt / elbow etc, etc it will be on you before you have time to "Defend". I guess that's where "Awareness" comes in.
I remember reading one such book where the author was advocating a system where he commentates to himself when walking down the street...a bit OTT maybe!
"Never put yourself in a situation your going to need to defend yourself physically."Disagree with this statement. I think it show say "Never Knowingly...". Those kind of things just happen. You could walk round a corner, be driving your car, have a friend being attacked and beaten senseless etc, etc."Always being prepared" I think is a good mantra to have and hopefully most forms of Martial Arts training will help in this regard.

Although i agree with you, however and i've been put in some situations some remember last halloween i was put in a situation where i had to use a self defense and awareness over a pretty bizzarre situation. So your right it can happen anytime, anywhere. But i still firmly believe u can NOT put yourself in many positions where the chances limit itself from a self def situation.
Nonetheless, i think for the most part SD is pretty self explanitory for the most part. It is what it is, and it's not what it's not!!
But we must train for it and remain calm in those situations.. I'll tell you a good self defense tool, I took a polygraph for a state police job yesterday i remained calm answered truthfully and from what i felt was none of their business not so truthfully and by preparring against this stupid part of the test I used a form of SD to defeat thier interrogation tactics.. hahaha and yes BTW I passed!! lol amazing how that polygraph is BS

Yes, I remembered your post (now you remind me) and I am sure you learnt from it.
I am confused by your point though? You were out drinking with friends and it went awry (happens a lot!). You didn't plan to put yourself in that situation. They got what they deserved IMO.
I remember a situation in Oakland a few years back. I was out with my instructor and he was an ex-kickboxing champion, personal fitness trainer and knew how to handle himself. A car pulled up as we were walking down the street in the evening. A bottle smashed and 4 guys got out. Before I know what happened my instructor was running. I had a moment of clarity "*****, if this guy is running then I better be too!". A valuable lesson.
It was probably nothing to do with us (the car pulled up behind us and nobody ran after us) but like you say, why take the chance?

LOL...War stories, gotta love them. Shite happens whether you want it to or not, it's life. You can only control you, not the other billion + ding dongs that cruise the rock. Just flow, chill, and relax, if it comes, oh well..out of your hands. It came not by your want..so simply embrace it and do the do that's gotta get done. Life is far to short to sweat the small stuff, and getting into silly ass scraps is definitely small stuff.
Corey bro, quit picking on the locals ya frigging ape..LOL...damn Indiana boys..all that corn goes to their head! ;)....Hay Bail crushing country boys.
Easy, Cheesy...chick and peasy
