Hello,
Does the training dvds (specifically the Y5 set) have chaptering?, i.e. if want to review a specific section can go through a chapter menu instead of fast forwarding through the whole video
many thanks

I don't think that this series has specific chapter headings. It's certainly a great introduction to the PTK system, and I recommend that you get it because training this material will give you a very solid foundation of solo and partner work.

Everyone has a specific learning style and I understand why chapter headings are an advantage when you're learning material for the first time vis-a-vis a DVD. In my case I have very little short-term memory so learning a lot of material without being able stop to repeat and repeat it ad nauseum is difficult for me. My solution in the case of non-chaptered DVD's is simply to take a small "chunk" of information, write it out in a notational system, and practice only that "chunk" until I know I have it down. At that point how it appears on a DVD is irrelevant - because I don't need the DVD anymore.

Another problem I have is that it's hard for me to stay on task -so once I have a "chunk" of information to learn I use a two-interval timer to drill material on a 3 minute on, 1 minute off basis.

Here for example is a 24 minute workout taken from the first set of information given in the "5-Attack Sub-System" DVD from PTI:

Work Out 1: 3 min. on/1 min. off A-F

A. Foreward Broken Attacks:

1. Broken #1 (return on thrust; bring stick over head)
2. Broken #2 (return on thrust; bring stick over head)
3. Broken #3 (return on thrust; bring stick over head)
4. Broken #4 (return on thrust; bring stick over head)

B. Forward Fluid Attacks:

1. Fluid #1 (Umbrella and tap; bring stick over head)
2. Fluid #2 (Tap as you “stretch out” and pull stick back to opposite shoulder)
3. Fluid #3 (Umbrella and tap; bring stick over head. Use knees x 2)
4. Fluid #4 (Tap as you “stretch out” and pull stick back to opposite shoulder; transfer weapon back down)

C. Reverse Broken Attacks:

1. Reverse Broken #1 (flywheel; return on thrust; bring stick over head)
2. Reverse Broken #2 (Bring stick to opposite shoulder; return on thrust; bring stick over head)
3. Reverse Broken #3 (from opposite side, bait with hand-assisted horizontal rake; pull back on stick [scoop]; cut up; return on thrust; bring stick over head)
4. Reverse Broken #4 (bring fist to heart (fake #1)(return on thrust; bring stick over head)

D. Reverse Fluid Attacks:

1. Reverse Fluid #1 (Flywheel; help with other hand)
2. Reverse Fluid #2 (Tap as you “stretch out”)
3. Reverse Fluid #3 (from opposite side, bait with hand-assisted horizontal rake; pull back on stick [scoop]; cut up)
4. Reverse Fluid #4 (bring fist to heart (fake #1))

E. Reverse/Circular/Forward

1. Reverse Fluid #1; Umbrella; Forward #1 (transfer to opposite shoulder)
2. Reverse Fluid #2; bring stick over head to shoulder; Forward #2
3. Reverse Fluid #3; Umbrella; Forward #3 (transfer to opposite shoulder)
4. Reverse Fluid #4; bring stick over head to shoulder; Forward #4

F. Forward/Reverse

1. Foreward #1, Reverse #1
2. Forward #2, Reverse #1
3. Foreward #3, Reverse #3
4. Forward #4; Reverse #4

Again - the point of training in this admitedly simplistic way is to just get a "chunk" of information under your belt. And o.k. - 24 minutes is not a lot of time spent training (but it's 24 minutes spent not not training).

If you spent a considerable part of your time over the next two years "chunking" all of the information on the introductory DVD's in this manner (and then training it in 24 minute intervals) you'd learn an awful lot.

Your question acutually begs the question of whether learning a lot of information at one time is preferable to learining (and training) a small amount of information over an extended time. Certainly having chapter headikngs to return to again and again would be a nice feature - but writing it all out works for me. Another solution I use from time to time is to use a video editor to break up the "chunks" into MP4 files for my iPod - but that probably speaks more for my OC tendencies than I'd care to admit.to right now...

I guess that once you have a lot of MP4 files on your iPod that you really don't need anymore then you know that you've trained the material.

The basic material in the Y-5 set is divided into large chapters of similar content, rather than individual techniques. So you'll find a chapter on knife parries and another on disarms, rather than each disarm having its own chapter. Once you get into the more complex material (such as espada y daga) many of those DVDs have chapters that comprise only one technique.
