Might be reading crafty's mind. His angulation, the attacks by draw, and the doubled up diamond closing footwork against rashad.

Maybe a trip to Belem before KT 3?

Actually, when I was at Rico Chiapparelli's RAW Gym several years back, Lyotto and I worked out together various times. Nice young man, lots of class, and kind to this old man as we moved together.

Frank Trigg had just shown me the mirror lead material with which I begin the "Kali Tudo 1" DVD (Trigg 101 and Trigg 102) and I saw that it might help southpaw Lyotto. I asked Rico's permission to work it with Lyotto (RAW is not the sort of gym where you want to step on anyone's dick!) and received gracious clearance to do so.

So I worked the material with Lyotto and he seemed to like it a lot. He also seemed to like the Kali portions that I included too.

In that what we call the Trigg material (because I learned it from Frank) is known by some (but not many) in MMA (e.g. Rich Franklin has fights where he did it very well) I must be clear and point out that it is not the Kali portion of "DBMA's Kali Tudo", but it is a part of the Tudo portion of our KT material-- and that Lyotto does it really, really well. On the DBMAAssn forum we had a close analysis of his fight with Tito Ortiz from this point of view.

Surf Dog, who often judges at the UFC and TUF, told me he would relay my best wishes to Lyotto last night. I still haven't heard back, so I don't even know if he remembers me, or if he thinks I influenced him in any way or not.

My usual access to the UFC was out of town last night and so I still have not seen the fight for myself. Sounds like I really need to!!!

Where is Belem?

The Adventure continues!

Saw the clip of the fight on the net. Very impressive on many levels-- even a straight blast in there!

Did you catch the diamond entries when he was faking a series of kicks on rashad?

Yes I did. :-)

there are some takedowns where Lyoto's hitting takedowns (which according to a DBMA Assn member are from Tekki series of katas in Shotokan Karate). If I didn't know that I would be thinking they were silat-- funny how the wheel turns.

I recall seeing a video possibly done by Lion Heart Productions the people put put out the PKT series with Tuhan Bill McGrath and the video with Tatang Ilustrisimo. Anyway... it was my first exposure to Silat and I remember seeing a style of Silat that looked like a hard style of Karate.

I could be totally wrong about who put the VHS tapes out though.

IIRC it was Alan Sacchetti's Lionheart Productions that made several VHS videos with some wonderful footage of various masters from the Philippines including an emphasis on Sachetti's teacher GT LEO Gaje. There were several of GT Gaje's then right hand man Bill McGrath.

Anyway, , , perhaps what Lyoto is doing with his Karate will have a positive effect on my mission with Kali Tudo. Silat for MMA has been doubted by many/most, yet here we just saw some footage of Lyoto that looks quite close to some standard silat moves. (BTW this certainly causes me to re-evaluate what I thought I knew of Karate)

Some interesting gifs here of what Lyoto was doing, some classical karate, and comments on similarity to certain silat moves

Does Lyoto credit other arts in his arsenal? Or does he only promote his main art of Shotokan?

His background is as such, to my knowledge.

Began Shotokan at 4

Began Sumo competitively at 13. Also began sparring with judoka at this time.

Began BJJ at 14(he's a black belt, and recently beat a top US competitor in a no-gi Submission match).

Trained MT in thailand for a short period.

Trained Shooto with Inoki.

During his last camp, he brushed up on his Judo with HW Gold Medalist Satoshi Ishii.

Most of his standup seems to be the specific adaptation of Machida-do karate, which is a very old-school shotokan style, quite unlike a lot of what you see in a lot of point-sparring. His takedowns seem to come primarily from the same source. His clinch and takedown defense seems primarily to be Sumo.

Wow , Mike sounded intelligent....seems he has found his chill point in life. He was a great heavy weight champ but was used and abused by the system, himself, and every piece of garbage he had surrounding him, sponging off of him etc. It saddens me about the loss of his little girl. That is a punch he will never recover from. I always liked Mike, not everything he said or did but there always seemed to be something else about him that was intriguing. A poignant and at times a sad figure in the world of Boxing ( a shady frigging business to be sure).
