This is what I always remind my students: You can die by falling from normal standing height...and a hit you think is nonlethal could end up killing someone.

Don't join an altercation unless absolutely necessary. If you see people getting into a confrontation you can try and diffuse it, but don't get involved as it can always escalate quickly. Second, Do anything necessary to keep your distance from an altercation if one erupts. Your putting your life and those around you on the line (i.e. if you have children flee).

Nothing good happens in bars....everyone thinks it does but in essance those are the same louses that are drunker than cooter brown, so their argument is a moot point. Having bounced for years and years in regular clubs, strip clubs, pool halls, etc. it is an utterly amazing and vile underbelly of society. It's sad that so many drink away there lives in these places, and as the article showed take others lives as well. In my opinion stay clear. If altercations arise mind your business and beat a hasty retreat. I learned my lesson years ago, tried to deescalate a husband from pummeling his wife only to have the wife attack me with an ash tray for sorting her husband out. If I see that crap now I simply walk away..they can beat each others brains in for all I care..have at it..just don't cross that line that dictates whats yours and mine! PERIOD.
