Hey all! Just wondering if there are plans for a 2009 Pacific Island Tournament (formerly Nagasulong) this year? I didn't get a chance to go last year, but would really like to go this year, if I can plan things properly. Any info would be very helpful and much appreciated! Thanks!

I couldn't make last year's tourney due to a slight case with a "alleged" cardiovascular incident which I had in August of 08.. I had to lay off of training for more than 6 months due to the controversial discussion between the doctor and myself (no blood was let). But I got a clear bill of health earlier this year, so I will be making my every 5 yr trip back to the states this July for the camp (if I can drop the wife off at walmart for 4 days) so I will trying to make the camp with GT Tortal this july.. I am also scheduling to go on various road trips while back stateside for almost a month to visit old stomping grounds and vacation spots of my youth.. I will be taking my time when attending the camp, so don't be looking for any explosive movement on my behalf this time, although I have been requested to show some of the Balintawak from GM Reston by some of the other DTS brothers.. I will do this pending approval with John and others, but will be after the seminar hours so not to take anything from the project that is already scheduled.. My dates of travel scheduled so far are from 7 July through the end of the month as the wife will be making her once a decade trip to the mainland with me.. Looking for it..

Can't Wait! The only thing missing last year was a mascot! I didn't get to catch all the competitions last year because of the constant flow of people asking questions about the blades displayed in the "Sandata Show". Not complaining, it was worth it just seeing the look of disbelief on their faces, overwhelmed by the beauty of the antique blades. I think we created more sandata addicts too. : ) It was just as much a leaning experience for my self as it was them. Most people had no idea that each culture had their own weapons, symbols, systems, history or different techniques. I was lucky enough to have one of the sandata experts their to hit up for info when someone asked me a question I was unsure of. I missed the knife competition though %$&@ @# and that is my favorite! But I did see sword competition. I was walking up to the window when Datu Tim and the LSA gentleman started going at it and you could hear the contact all the way outside the building. Two heavy hitters there. I got to check out two of the seminars the precious day and they were really great. The Lua seminar which was taught by Asidro and the Lameco Escrima seminar that was taught by Guro Keith Wetoskey. So now I'm hooked. I was able to check out two of the demos the day of the comptition. The live blade demo with Pendakar put the whole place at a dead silence with everyone's eyes as big as silver dollars. All you could hear was blades expertly sliding across each other as they expertly deflected each other, " shk, shk, shk", no amateur steel banging going on there. And of course I got to see everyone jumping up and down with excitement, cheering laughing and clapping as GT Nene threw John around like a rag doll. "Throw'em again, please, please, throw'em again ! " Both were receiving nonstop requests for an encore. There were quite a few other cool events that the other raved about. Plus Mushtaq was teaching Juru's after the tournament that look really sweet and applicable(deadly). We all know who got the Sadata Show prize(a WWII Tausug Pungkul Barung) and we awarded Mushtaq with the Nagatulong Award(a 44" antique Bagabao Kampilan), for helping so many people and sharing so much over the years always asking for nothing in return. Unsure of the prizes for this year, but we promise they will be well worth the efforts for attending and competing. There are other people already inquiring about this year's P.I.G. and the interest is steadily growing. So I am sure this P.I.G. will be even bigger and Phatter that last year's. Plus I hope to be able to present John with the first P.I.G. Mascot. LOL

Hello everyone!

I am looking very much forward to seeing everyone again this year at the
Pacific Island Gathering. Last year I had a very good time with great people. I will again be presenting a hand forged ginunting from my personal panday to the so called Top Dog again at this year's tournament. I just hope John is ready to be part of the entertainment again this year, he is a good sparring partner.

See you all there, Grandmaster Jerson "Nene" Tortal Sr.

Hello Ebutler,
Well, at the Pacific Island Gathering And Tournament or to make it easier P.I.G.A.T. Midway Kodenkan, we did have some very well respected Guros in attendance whom are excellent at various methods of FMA empty hand including Panantukan. Which in laymens terms translates into "Fistfight" but has come to mean here in the States "Dirty Boxing"... Nevertheless, if you are coming here too Chicago to participate and network, odds are good someone may know an instructor in Georgia. I personally would recommend Stephen Shy in Florida, and he does do seminars (check out www.DTSKali.com (http://www.DTSKali.com) ). Also try posting your question on other threads. Hope this helps!

Thanks,

Hello again ebutler,
I think the bigger question is are you interested in coming too the tournament and gathering in Chicago at Midway Kodenkan on the weekend of October the 11th? If so you may talk with a wide variety of Grandmasters, Masters, Guros and students. These people have differing concepts just as to what Panantukan is and how to apply it. Nevertheless, the tournament itself will be on Sunday the 11th events will cover single sword, knife and sayaw (forms)and others stay tuned too this thread for those announcements.. . The Saturday before we will have our seminar series with a wide variety of instructors from the world of FMA, I have not posted the list as I am waiting on a few more confirmations. However, in the future I suggest you post on the DTS (Dekiti Tirsia Siradas Kali) thread and folks will be gald to elucidate on the various forms of Panantukan out there....Better yet Grandmaster Tortal will be having a camp here check that out on the "camps" thread.

Thanks,
John

Hello Everyone and Ebutler,
Well The Pacific Island Gathering and Tournament at Midway Kodenkan 5159 S. Archer Ave. in Chicago. Will be held on October 10th thru 11th. Saturday the 10th will be the seminar series and like I posted previously I am still waiting on some confirmations for which Guros and others whom will be teaching. Sunday is the tournament proper where you get to test and critique what you have learned and possibly see a new twist on it from another systems perspective. The idea here is to grow and help others in a friendly yet competitive atmosphere. However if you are planning on being a surgeon this art is not the one for folks who wish to protect their hands others in this catagory would be, hand models, concert pianists and the aforementioned surgeon.....

Thanks,
John

Hello Dekiti-Tirsia Siradas Brothers and Sisters,

Grand Tuhon Jerson "Nene" Tortal Sr. has made the Pacific Island Gathering and
Tournament, October 10th & 11th, 2009 in Chicago, IL, "MANDATORY" to "ALL"
current Dekiti-Tirsia Siradas instructors and apprentices residing in North
America and the surrounding US territories. October 10th there will be a
seminar instructed by Grand Tuhon in which he will be personally be accessing
the progression and maintainability of each individual instructor or apprentice
to ensure the preservation and propagation of the family system. On October
11th, all instructors and apprentices will be obligated to participate in at
least one of the blade oriented competitions. Grand Tuhon and I have donated an
authentic Talibong from Negros for the tournament. Grand Tuhon will be
presenting the Talibong to the "Top Dog", or overall winner on the tournament.
This notice will be posted on Grand Tuhon's website, www.dtskali.com (http://www.dtskali.com/) and if
anyone has any questions, details or needs any other information pertaining to
the P.I.G., please contact Grand Tuhon at his personal email address:

OK folks, just got off the phone with John and we've clarified some more details we can share.

In continuation of tradition, all first place prizes will be live blades, no trophies or patches here:
1st place prizes - balisong direct from Batagas
2nd place prizes - custom made flat sticks in Purpleheart and Padauk
3rd place prizes - Pair of Rattan sticks

Prizes for Combat Divisions are; live combat and survival style knives as well as certificate of competing from Freestyle Krav Maga

Entry fees are $35 first division, $5 for each additional division, $10 to add Combat Knife to offset materials. Weather permitting, Combat Knife will be outside.

To keep the tournament moving along speedily, we will have food brought in for nominal purchase costs.

New this year we are planning to have tshirts made up and available for purchase as well at cost. The design is almost finalized.

Top Dog award is now unofficially called the Top Spirit Award. This year there will be three or more top awards given out by anonamous vote by all judges and referees after completion of all events. Winner's need not even win any event. Judges will vote for the three competitors who they feel exibited the most Spirit of a fighter. There may even be spontaneous awarding of additional prizes during the tournament for merit.
Pictures will be posted soon of some of the prizes and believe me, they're worth coming for.

The Pacific Island Gathering and Tournament continues to grow and improve to provide a venue for blade style practitioners to come and test their skills.

If you're within driving range, what's stopping you?

I told him about the seminar and tourney in Chicago in october and since he flies for Continental, he might be able to deadhead to Chicago for the seminar.. He is a US Marine Colonel (reserve) and is a big training nut.. He studys danzan ryu jujitsu when he is in Hawaii along with what ever he can get.. He said he might be able to make the seminar, but it depends on the training schedule for this deployment prep.. I will forward him the information when we get together this next week and let him know so he can check the training schedule..

FYI, this past August, Grandmaster Alfredo Bandalan granted promotions to both Brent Cash and John Cipkar, Sr. to the rank of Master. Hopefully, it was an unintended oversight that Master Cash was not listed as an instructor for the BDP espada e' daga seminar segment. He is an integral if not sustaining member of the BDP family and deserves to be recognized for volunteering his time and efforts in support of this years gathering.

It just blows my mind that as many as 10 people will be coming from Terre Haute. SEAMA's are just not very popular here in my area, maybe this is beginning of a new trend! It takes someone who is not afraid to step on a few toes to get things going as we have seen in the past.. With the debacle of last year regarding the former associates within the midwest DTS crew, I am glad to see that that was just the emphasis to get things going on the scale it is at so far..

I wish I could be there for this event as I miss getting out of my wheel chair, leaving my oxygen bottle by the chair and hobbling my broke ass out there to fight with the younger whippersnappers.. This would be a good event to celebrate my birthday which was this last friday (Sept 25) and yes I was born in the last century, so keep the jokes to a minimum..

Hopefully, my student who is on assignment in commiefornia will be able to get away and attend this event..

Keep plugging and swinging those sticks, keeps the flies off the wall and the critics away from this crew..

If I am off line for a few days, don't sweat the small stuff, we are buttoning up for a small storm heading our way.. It is not as big as the one that just hit the Philippines, but it came from the same area when it formed.. Will keep all informed as things progress

10, that's fantastic Mike! There'll be at least 6 of us coming to compete from Michigan and I know of others from all corners of this 1/2 of the country.
One of the great things I love about this tournament is the new friends I make every time and find them in places I didn't know about.

And the Sandata displays of stuff that people bring out to share.

What time does the Tournament start?

Do we need to bring our own wekaf? I assume you supply sticks?

Hello Terry,
If you bring your oun that would be great but we have helmets available for those whom do not have their own. Also with Preregestration one saves $10 the door price is $10 extra. Example you sign up for all events, that is $55 so...for all four events at the door it would be $65 sorry for any confusion....

Terry, our every intention is to run round robin/double elimination for each division. Some divisions may just be so darn large that it may not be possible but we have every intention of doing so. We try to keep the balance of giving everyone a lot of action but not staying till 8 at night.
At a minimum, every fighter should expect to have 2 fights but could easily have 4 in one division. Some did last year. I try to keep the fights cycling fast, one after another.
But, if you enter Sayaw, sword, knife and combat knife your participation time goes way up :mouth_wat

Don't forget we are going to have the Sandata/Senjata show again this year too. Just spoke to John about it a day or so ago. I know Navadisha was able to obtain a couple of "Killer" pieces over the past year. Can't wait to see and feel them! I am going to call Guro Keith about brinig has later today too..... KaliCowboy got a new baby I got to hold while is was down there and it's well worth the trip to check out. It's easily one of the top three Ilonggo blades that I have ever seen or felt. Hope he's brining it, it cuts like a dream!

Got the new shipment of shirts we sold out of too. So please get a hold of me immediatyely when you arrive if I owe you a shirt. Because last time we went throught 115 shirts in less than a week and we ran out of the most popular sizes.

Can't wait to see everyone!

Thanks for the compliment on the shirt design! : )

I stuck with traditional Ilonggo and Aklan blades from Negros and Panay. All the blades are original pieces. You will be able to see most of them at the PIG. It is an attempt to clear up misconceptions about the "Original Blades" of the Tortal family system. As you vcan see, there are no fluted blasdes, no Karambits, no Balisongs, no Barungs, etc. Out of respect for the rich Ilonggo and Aklan cultures that are the foundation of the system. Stick'in to tradition! : )

What a great time had by all! This year was some of the hardest hitting that I have ever seen with a padded stick! Everyone did a fantastic job. There were tribes from all over the USA.

An unknown group from Mininsota proved that you don't have to have a big following to do well.

Chris from KC fits right in with his brothers Kurt and John who fought last year and who I have come to know and love as family. They are all great fighters, heavy hitters and humble guys, I love spending time with them. What a priceless combination.

Once again John's DTS group proved to have what it takes to get the job done, what a great showing for him and his group from Chi Town. They are repeat champs in their favorite divisions.

Steve and Cole Van Harn from the Navadisha tribe proved once again that they can bring it. Steve with his fair and unbiased judging in the center ring and Cole for his great fighting skills and good sportsmanship.

I can't forget Datu Tim Hartman and his fighter June who not only fought in every event, he fought in every division he could! He won so much hardware that he could open his own Martial Art Supply store! What a great guy!

I want to thank Patrick Rogers and his group from MO. What a family they are and a great bunch of people, who I am happy to call my friends. You all are great fighters and true sportsman. Any of you are welcome at my home any time.

I want to thank my friends, Master Style and Mike Snow for being there for me and my fighter Craig. We had an awsome, awsome time. All we could talk about all the way home was the fun we had.

Last of all I want to thank Grand Master Jerson "Nene" P. Tortal Sr. who has given me the oppertuninity to represent him and his family system in the South Eastern United States. It is a true horor for me.

If I left any one out, please PM me and i will post the fun we had!

God Bless,

Stephe Shy
