TWO of Cebu’s arnis grandmasters may face off in a duel today.
This after Bonifacio “Loloy” Uy accepted the challenge of his former teacher, Grandmaster Ciriaco “Cacoy” Cañete, to a full-contract no-holds-barred fight.
Uy said he will wait for Cañete starting 10 a.m. today at the Cebu City Sports Center grandstand.
The dispute started after Uy questioned the authenticity of Cañete’s 1948 fight with a certain Domingo in Balamban, Cebu.
“As you wish, I will wait for you at 10 in the morning of Jan. 11 at the grandstand of the Cebu City Sports Center,” Uy said in a letter he sent to Cacoy which a copy was sent to Sun.Star Cebu.
“We can have our fight right in front of the stands with no one in attendance except our seconds. I will have Diony Cañete as second and you can bring either one or all of the following to serve as your seconds: Dennis, Atty. Amorito and Manuel Oyson Jr. If you are agreeable, we can allow one reporter each from the Sun.Star Cebu, The Freeman and CDN to attend.
In addition to this, Uy asked his former mentor to bring weapons of his choice.
The story is over a year old. Did anything come of this? It seems a bit silly...almost like a publicity stunt.
