Hello All,

I hope all who are receiving this is in good health and spirits...

I have been doing a lot of heavy sparring for the past few years and have been trying to execute a lot of the moves i've learned in FMA... mabye its my natural ability to not be able to pull of a majority of them...

i have noticed that angles 1 and 2 and thursts are the most pre-dominant strikes for hitting... and as for defending, the umbrella and pluma can be done in real time dynamic sparring and of course distancing/angling (footwork) away from the strikes are the most effective...

I was wondering what are other people's experiences when sparring...

what are the most effective (most probable) offensive and defensive techniques you have have encountered/used?

thanks!

Captain

In Kabaroan, we have a technique called "TODASAN" (merging) that I like to use. It is difficult to do well, and certainly requires much practice, but once learned can be used effectively when combined with the other half of the art "TIRADIN" (force on force).

GM Estalilla and Sigung Ed performed this (TODASAN) in a seminar hosted by Guro Dan Inosanto and was impressed by the technique.

A number one or a number two are among the most common techniques in sparring. Thrusts can also be pulled off. One of the reasons for the limited number of techniques (cf. tapado) is that you usually spar at largo, and some techniques are much more effective at medio-to-corto.

In sparring, I most often see the Modern Arnis 1-4 and 6 (forehand and backhand 45 degree and horizontal strikes and the palm-down thrust), including a quick backhand wittik; hiradas abaniqos; and reverse 1 and 2 when someone uses figure 8 (ocho-ocho).

If your sparring set-up allows it, try jamming one of those diagonal strikes and controlling the stick with your live hand. You may find that, between the control and having moved at least to medio, you have a wider variety of options.
