What a perposterous question to ask: http://www.dailyrandomsites.com/manny-pacquiao-is-a-better-hero-than-jose-rizal

The answer is obvious: NO. Manny, a great boxer, is not a better hero than Jose Rizal.

For one thing, Rizal is educated--he's a graduate of the Ateneo and a physician--he's an eye doctor. He also died for the Philippines.

Knocking back a few opponents in the boxing ring is great and everything but it isn't anywhere remotely close to writing Noli Me Tangere and exposing the evils of Spanish colonialism.

Whoa. That is indeed a preposterous question.

Although...there can be some benefit to asking. Every country has young folks that do not know as much about their nation's history, perhaps a question like this will encourage a person to explore their past and to learn about the many great people that came before. :asian:

For me it just boils down to one thing.. Which of them sacrificed his life for his country?

Are we so lacking in national self-esteem that a great boxer is now being considered a national hero, as suitable for emulation as Jose Rizal?

The idea is deeply insulting to me.

They are simply not the same or in the same context. Yet Manny does give hope to many Filipinos and that certainly is to be respected. Still he is in the end just an athlete. http://www.fmatalk.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Manny will never be like Rizal. I know Manny has a good heart. with all the philanthropy he has done for the Philippines. But, he so easily manipulated by the corrupt Filipino Politicians. He ran for congress during the 2004 elections, now there are speculations that he wants to run for office during the 2010 elections. WTF does he know about running a country? Pacqiao should stay where he is good at and not make a fool of himself.

I think you could say that was just some post-fight euphoria combined with sensationalized journalism. That would be like a journalist making the comment after the Olympics that Michael Phelps is a bigger American hero than George Washington. It's obviously ludicrous and not worth being upset over.
