In Albo Kali Silat, we do some work with the balisong. We do not do as much work with this type of blade as we do with other folding knives, however. The balisong has both advantages and disadvantages when compared to many modern "tactical" folders. As Albo Kali Silat is based in the U.S., and balisongs are restricted and illegal to carry in some states, we focus more on what students can legally carry and will most likely have on them in the event of an unprovoked "street" attack. In general, students are taught the "rudiments" of the balisong and advanced students do more work, including sparring with trainers, with them. At a student's request, more extensive training with the balisong will be conducted. Albo Kali Silat does not focus on the "flashy tricks" possible with the balisong. Combative use is emphasized, with multiple openings and deployments, use of the handle as a flail or impact weapon, use of the knife as a palm stick, etc. taught.
I may do a balisong video later on. I apologize for the lateness of this reply. I am now at my new residence in Ohio, have my Internet connection up and running, but am still hip deep in boxes that I need to unpack and in the process of learning my way around my new office and responsibilities.

No worries J. I always wondered what the ALbo Bali stuff was like. Curiosity. Sounds kewl, I'd love to check a video about it. Hope unpacking is going ok. I hate moving....

Most of that stuff seem either impractical or based on unlikely scenarios anyway.

You mean, when faced with a guy trying to really hurt you, you aren't going to toss your knife up into the air and impress him with an aerial opening? :wink2:
No? Me neither. Balisong tricks are for playtime--not for when bad things are happening.
I am entertaining the idea of doing a balisong video for the Albo Kali Silat website. However, the next video going up on the site will be an empty hand video featuring some low level work, takedowns and finishes, in a real world environment and street clothes, with me working against a student who attacks with an Emerson Karambit Trainer. It is a very short video that we filmed this past Saturday while working on some photographs for an upcoming self-defense article in the Russian knife magazine, Prorez.
