Hello to all of my FMA & IMA brothers and sisters,
I am looking very forword about meeting everone at this years Nagasulong Championship. I also look forward to presenting the top overall competitor with a pinakama-ayo(top quality) hand forged Ginunting by my personal Panday in Negros, Occidental.

It will be a pleasure to attend NAGASULONG. I will be coming from Florida to spend time training with Grandmaster and if my injury permits, I will take a run at that Ginunting.
Everyone be sure to sign up for the right event. Nagasulong is the event to be in this year! Anything else is imitation. John Bednarski always puts on a good show. Without his input this event could not be the success that it is.
Grandmaster, I will see you again soon and I look forward to our time together.
God Bless,
Stephen

Team Navadisha will be attending for the 3rd year and bringing the heavy hitters down from Michigan. My son has to defend his knife title (he also just took Gold in Cebu, small brag).
We've added some new, serious characters to the team who are almost foaming at the mouth for some real action in the ring.
It has become unfortunate but we have had to announce a change in venue for the Pacific Island padded stick/sayaw tournament previously held in conjunction with the Sulong Championships in New Lennox, Illinois.
The supporters and promoters have reached a position of disagreement on the direction of the Sulong Championships combined tournament with the principles and have agreed to part ways.
Rather than take a temporary hiatus for this year to regroup, we would like to maintain the momentum this unique event has built up and will continue to hold the event this year for the sake of all the competitors who have been putting in the time and sweat to prepare for this exciting event.
As previously promoted it will still be held on October 12 but the venue will be changing to the Midway Kodenkan Dojo at 5159 S. Archer in Chicago, IL with all the same principles running this event.
It will now be known as the NagaSulong (thanks to GM Nene Tortal!) which we feel more closely reflects the sprit of the event. NagaSulong translates as “Bring it!”.
The venue this year will be slightly smaller at the Dojo but we also hope that the type of individuals who wish to compete in it really won’t mind.
They just want to test themselves with like minded individuals. With this in mind we will make every effort to make this a double elimination tournament for both knife and stick fighting to give everyone as much fun for their time and money as we can. And as for money, since we will be changing to a smaller venue, entry fees will be correspondingly lower. Now just $20 for the first event. The awards however will be the same.
Fight rules will again be first blood with the knife being stop point and the padded stick being continuous 2 minute rounds with concurrent scoring by the judges based on the first blood rules.
you have any questions, please feel free to contact John Bednarski at kali@midwaykodenkan.com (kali@midwaykodenkan.com)
Thanks,
John

We now have two tournaments on the same weekend. Which one should you attend? I will most likely be attending the Nagasulong Championship. I’m not taking sides in this little squabble. My choice is based on the fact that GT Tortal will not be at the Sulong tournament. I’m not 100% yet. I have some youth competitor whom would like to compete. Before we make the commitment I would like to see what the divisions are going to be like and if the rules have changed. Looking forward to receiving more Intel.
P.S. John, give me a call when you get the chance.

Tim, what age is your youth competitor? My son is 14 and so is Mariah Moore. Would be good to have some more age appropriate competition, 'though my son is game for the adults.
Rule's will not be changing from last year. I'll be centering/running the fights.

Hello again everyone,
To the best of my knowlege there is no salungatan. They are just doing their own thing. I have been told by both, that John focses on the Pacific Island competition with little knowlege of Karate and Tae Kwon Do and Norm on the Karate competition with little knowlege of SE Asian and Pacific Island systems. I wish them both the best.
This will be my first personal presentation at the NAGASULONG Championship. So again, I am looking very forward to the event, seeing some of the people that have been supporting my tour and meeting everyone that I have not yet had the opportunity to do so.

Busy time in the islands with the job and personnel matters .. I will be looking forward to attending training with GM Nene and the rest of the DTS group in the Philippines once things settle down and I can schedule vacation time..

Datu Tim, There will be three competition divisions. Sayaw, padded knife fighting and padded stick fighting. It is our intention to have a youth class, senior/masters and light, middle and heavyweight classes in both adult divisions. For those of you who’ve run your own tournaments I’m sure you know that sometimes weight divisions have to be combined in order to give people some competition. Otherwise you wind up with champions who only had one mismatched fight. We’d like to make sure everyone gets at least two fights in their division, hence the plan to use double elimination as well.
If turn out is not large enough, we may have to combine into only one or two adult weight classes. If turn out is outstanding (we sure hope so) we may run even more weight classes or due to time simply not be able to do double elimination. Same as with the youth division. Two youths of the same age may have completely different physical sizes and sometimes pairings just wouldn’t be fair. As this tournament is strictly for the competitors we hope to strike the balance between providing as much opportunity for experience with making sure pairings are fair.
I’ll put up the rules in another post.

Then hop a plane and get your doggin down here for this event.. It is most definitely going to be a good time and this will be a good way to start building bridges by making friends and networking to get the Midwest FMA community recognized.. The original members of this group have been networking and getting this thing off the ground for more than 4 yrs and finally have people from all over the country getting together for a common goal and that is to help the FMA in the midwest get better recognition instead of being splintered as it has been in the past..
As head instructor for the sinko tiros and balintawak group on guam, My group and I stand behind this organization as it is something that has been lacking in the states for years.. This is how things should be as we had organizations like this in the Philippines where the different eskrima/arnis/kali groups would get together with out all the political heinie kissing and have a good time exchanging philosophies and training ideas..

That's what new friends are for.. Wiping out their bank accounts while providing them tools of destruction while they wait to ride the grey hound bus back to their homes..
Bill makes some serious good toys of destruction.. He made my first bowie clone with the way I wanted it. So go west young man and take plenty of cash or increase your credit card limit, because we all know how FMA practitioners like new sharp pointy toys.

Hello everyone!
The Nagasulong Seminar day looks to be quite the event all its own....... And we are not done yet, still waiting on a couple of other outstanding instructors to tell us if they will be able to make the event.
So far we have, drum roll please...........
Grand Tuhon Jerson 'Nene' Tortal / Dekti-Tirsia siradas
Grandmaster Alfredo Bandalan / Doce Pares
Datu Tim Hartman / Modern Arnis - Kombatan - Balintawak Concepts
Guru Samuel Clark / Pencak Silat
Isidro Trajillo / Hawaiian Lua
Sensei Jose Duenas / Danzan Ryu JuJutsu
Guro Ron Kazak / Lucay Lucay Kali / Panantukan
If Nagasulong continues to grow at this rate, it may have to become a 3 day event for next year.
There will also be cash flowing to a charitable organization as always, but John and the other gentlemen do not wish to use it as a marketing tool to promote the event and/or them selves.
p.s. There will be a Sandata / Senjata show at the Nagasulong Championships this year as well.

As promised, here are the rules. Please ask if you have any questions.
NagaSulong tournament rules
Sayaw (forms)
Sayaw competition is open to all categories; empty hand, single or double weapon, long/short and flexible weapons. Scoring is based on 4 judges scoring a maximum of 25pts with a low of 5 pts. In the event of a tie for first through 4th place, competitors may use a secondary form but it is not required for a runoff. All SE Asian styles are welcome in this event.
Single stick padded stick fighting
Scoring with be First Blood, blade rules. Judges will give priority to strikes demonstrate cutting or stabbing technique and power while using accuracy, defense, aggressiveness, ring control and strategy. Scoring will be continuous and will only be stopped by the referee when pointless counter strikes after being scored upon occurs. Fights will not be paused to call for scores. Each corner judge will have click counters to keep score of points scored for red and blue fighter. At the end of two minutes, fighter with the most consistent points wins the match. In the unlikely event of a tie, one tiebreaker skirmish will be used. First score wins.
If contact is made and a counter is made, only the first point counts and the “skirmish” series is ended. If no counter is made, fighter making first contact can continue to score points until the “skirmish” ends.
Primary targets:
· Top, front and sides of the helmet (Thrusts to the head or neck are prohibited and may result in disqualification
· Front and sides of the thigh and body
· Both arms and hands
Prohibited techniques
Punching, kicking or kneeing
Grappling or wrestling
Trusting to the face or neck
Throws or sweeps
Locks or holding
Foul or abusive language.
Punyo (butt) strikes with the weapon
Strikes to the knees or belowWitiks, Saltiks or Abaniko strikes are legal but are regarded as set-up techniques and do not by themselves score a point as this is a blade scoring system using the cutting edge of the weapon. Any power/primary technique delivered successfully after the strategic use of the witik will be scored.
Strikes from one knee are allowed
Counter-strikes – Any counter strike delivered after receiving a point strike will not count. Any successful counter strike delivered after an equally successful parry, block or defensive evasion will be definitely scored and encouraged.
Jamming/checking with the free hand/forearm or weapon hand is allowed. Checking is defined as controlling by interception the opponent’s weapon hand, arm or torso. Any check that comes in contact with the opponent’s weapon will be considered a cut and the opponent will be awarded a point. This is to be considered a live blade.
Disarms must be immediate. Only impact strikes and leverage disarms using the wrist, arm, weapon and handgrips will be allowed. Any disarm caused by grabbing and pulling the opponent’s weapon by the blade will be considered a cut for the opponent. Participants abusing the instant disarm rule by continuing to tug-of-war for the disarm will be warned and potentially penalized. A disarm will result in a point deduction from the competitors final total or added to the opponents score if it cannot. Three disarms within the round is a TKO, fight is ended. Joints may not be locked or twisted for a disarm.
Loss of weapon due to the successful execution of a powerful attack or counter attack is not considered as a disarm. The disarm must be caused by the opponent. If the opponents strike is blocked and the block becomes disarmed, this is a disarm but you cannot disarm yourself.
Broken weapons(s) are not considered disarms. Time will be stopped and the weapon replaced.
Out of bounds. Participants must remain within the boundaries of the designated ring. Repeated out of bounds will result in a point deduction after two warnings have been given. Both feet must be out to be considered out of bounds. A fighter cannot score a point when one or both feet are out of bounds.
The referee will monitor the general progress of the match. He will determine the observance and adherence to the rules, the legitimacy of disarms and all point deductions for any foul or behavior.
For each foul, the referee may progressively issue at his discretion:
A casual warning
An official warning
A point deduction, generally after two official warnings
DisqualificationIf foul is severe enough, the referee can skip to any level.
Knife fighting
This is a knife/short blade weapon event. Weapon will have “marked” cutting edge. Full rules of Padded Stick fighting generally apply with exceptions. Only thrusts below the neck are allowed but not to the groin. Cuts and slashes can be delivered to any of the primary targets. All counters delivered after receiving a successful primary target cut or trust or after the referee has called break will be disregarded. Continued attempts to disregard and ignore the reality of knife combat, the referee’s commands/instructions and of the opponents valid score will be dealt with by point penalties. Participants should back off in acknowledgement of legitimate hits within each engagement. Strict adherence to the reality of edged weapon offense and defense techniques must be observed. Any participant trying to “camouflage” any mortal hits by delivering “zombie” counter attacks will receive a warning and possibly penalties.
Repeated disregard for safety and reality of edged weapons will result in disqualification and loss of match. Scores will be 3 judge consensus through use of referee call and by show of flags. Winner is fighter with most points after two continuous minutes. Fights will still continue at a fast pace.
Safety gear All competitors should provide personal safety gear such as cups (mandatory), Bra cups, helmet (WEKAF style) and hand protection (hockey, lacrosse, ect). If the competitor does not have helmet or gloves, they will be provided. Personal weapons will not be allowed, only those provided by the tournament host. Additional gear such as knee or elbow is allowed but discouraged to foster realion of combat. No street shoes are allowed on the mats. Mat shoes allowed with host approval
Arbitration – a duly agreed upon arbitrator will have final decision on all disagreements. Inquiries MUST be made before any other match in the relevant division continues. Placements are final at the end of the tournament.

For the sake of saftey, we do need protection on the head, neck and hands. Not too long ago two of my guy was sparring without any protection and one of them got swiped right across both eyes and was down for the count. also, i'm most likely going to be bringing an interested training partner of mine. seeing as how i fight him all the time, fighting him in the tournament (unless it's the finals or semifinals) obviously doesn't excite me. is the seating in the tournament random, or is consideration given for fighters that come from the same school/teacher?

Yes, every attempt will be made to not pair up fighters from the same school/system (unless maybe a specific request is made ) in every round.
Two of the main goals of the tournament is to give fighters time accross from someone they are unfamiliar with and time against styles they are unfamiliar with.

The 54" is worn tied around the waist. The doubles are carried wrapped around the hands.
These are in the Arnis Sikaran Sandatahan System of KP Bong Jornales.
KP Bong's system if very fluid and uses both hands in a complimentary way but independent at the same time. The doubles are used similar to what you may have seen done with Poi twirling but with a much nastier outcome. Lots of whipping strikes and manipulating around the body. His also have monkey paw knots on the ends similar to what is used to control the carabao by the nose.
I understand, I have only heard of your instructor as another who uses the ropes.

interesting. seeing as how you tie monkey paw knots in the end, you must use a much thinner rope than we do. it seems like there is much more emphasis on striking with the lubid in the jornales system than in the garimot system. for us, the lubid is a buno (wrestling) weapon. we strike with it also, but most of the complexity of the weapon lies in tying, choking, and locking. there isn't much twirling. does the striking much resemble the usage of chain whip or rope dart in wushu?

interesting. seeing as how you tie monkey paw knots in the end, you must use a much thinner rope than we do. it seems like there is much more emphasis on striking with the lubid in the jornales system than in the garimot system. for us, the lubid is a buno (wrestling) weapon. we strike with it also, but most of the complexity of the weapon lies in tying, choking, and locking. there isn't much twirling. does the striking much resemble the usage of chain whip or rope dart in wushu?
tim
Yes, it's usage does resemble the dart in a way. There is also locking, ect but mostly twirling and striking.
It's probably a 5/8" rope though I do have a 3/4".

it will be fun to compare notes. the rope we use is probably about twice as thick, but about the same length, and also end-weighted.

It amazes me that there is such a saturation of FMA styles within 300-400 miles of Chicago!!! It takes an event the size of this to bring them out of the woodwork so they can start networking and sharing knowledge of their respective systems.. I am glad that this has been a continuing effort despite the recent events.. It shows me that irregardless of personal differences and opinions, we as FMA practitioners of different systems and regions of the Philippines where our respective arts originate can get through the tribal disputes and continue doing what we originally planned for the sulong/nagasulong organization..
I'm glad that the DTS crew in chicago and the extended dts family through out North America and elsewhere can represent the art that GM Nene has given us to experience and become a member of the family
Have fun and remember the old bald guy on the other side of the world.
Maraming Maraming salamat po for listening to my tirades and ramblings of recent.

Hi all! I have done several gathering/seminars with Guro Bednarski and have also had the honor of competing in the Pacific Island tournament now known as the Nagasulong. What a blast! I CAN'T WAIT! This event is incredible and it is a great step forward in promoting and encouraging the way of the Filipino Warrior. I have some new friends in Michigan that practice FMA and I am very excited to share this event with all my FMA Friends and competitors. I've been to so many tournaments that are the same old same old: The judges are not familiar with the style and just plain don't understand or appreciate the Filipino Style. This is not one of them. The Nagasulong event has the benefit of some very skilled and very knowledgeable and World renown Masters(like Master Buzz, Guru Mushtaq Ali, and Guru Bednarski and Multi World Champion Guru Steve Van Harn...and I am very honored to finally be able to meet and learn from Grandmaster Nene Tortal!) Nagasulong does not discriminate or restrict anyone because of age or sex either. If you can compete, YOU CAN COMPETE! And I'm proof! I'm a 14 year old Girl and Last year I took first in the Women's knife fighting event but they didn't make me stop there. I only had one competitor and I was really wanting and needing a good challenge. So I competed in the men's event and in the Men's stickfighting event! I wasn't treated special or different or gently...just EQUAL. Nagasulong is an event for everyone...including WOMEN. If you're looking for a challenge and some good, clean, tough competition with educated and qualified judging, this is your opportunity.
OH, and the best bonus ever! Don't expect another trophy for your collection....if this is anything like last year's event, those who place are in for a real treat and possibly a new best friend(for those of us who love weapons- hint hint)
Dear Grand Master NENE, I look very forward to meeting you. With regard to the overall competitor event.... I hope the Grand Champion event will also cover weaponry because I'm going to BRING IT!

Hello Mariah,
I also look very much forward to meeting you as well. Along with Steve and Mushtaq. It will be a true pleasure after all of the positive things I have been told about you all from Guro Dalawa John and Lakan Guro Isa Jose' Duenas and Guru Mike Snow. Everyone working together so hard together as a family with such positive attitudes is what is making this event so successful and pleasant for everyone envolved. For all arts, FMA, IMA and MMA alike.

The Meaning of "Nagasulong",
NAGASULONG is an ancient word with multiple meaning, of my Ilonggo dialect. a) I have passed down to my advanced and intermediate students describing low, explosive, overwhelming attacks like those of an infuriated serpent or cobra. A portion of my Herada(groundfighting techniques). b) To progress in an agressive manner to ensure victory. in both war and in friendly comptetition.
My best wishes to all attending and participating. NAGASULONG!

Kamusta Ka.....I am happy to see that my good friend and student in Bahad Zu'Bu Guro John Bednarski is driving on with his aspirations of promoting the Pilipino cultural combative arts in a spirit of unity and brotherhood. It pains me to see that his integrity was called into check by someone who truly does not understand the MANA (spirit) needed to persevere in these ways we hold dear. I am sure with the line up of heavy hitters teaching the opening seminar that it will be a wonderful kickoff to a great weekend. There will be some excellent fighters in all categories and some excellent teachers as well. I wish all the participants the very best and if I may offer these few words...
"It is not about winning or losing, it is about coming together to promote and carry on the work of your teachers, their teachers etc....By being their and competing you are already a winner..so take the knowledge being offered and do your dead level best, in the end it will make you a better human being...that's what it truly is about".
So to John, Steve, Mushtaq and all the others I know I wish you the best..perhaps one day I can get up that way. At this time with a pregnant wife (6 months) who is having some difficulties in the pregnancy due to diabetes I dare not venture far from home, I hope you understand Guro John. Perhaps next year when all is well...mabuhay to all of you and God bless...have an absolute blast....and remember when in doubt, LUTANG out..do you feel me John..LOL

All the best in the tourney.. Let's hope the fecal matter that just was flushed out into the stream gets carried away with the current. It too will pass like water under the bridge.. Some people have an attitude that must be continually fed to inflate their position of self gradeur.. Let's remember that the job isn't done until the paperwork is finished..
As one of my favorite sayings go: "Who dares wins" and with the Nagasulong group along with the DTS family in the chicagoland area and elsewhere the DTS crew slings rattan or ginunting, push forward and never look back.

What's the schedule for Saturday?
Hello everyone!
The Nagasulong Seminar day looks to be quite the event all its own....... And we are not done yet, still waiting on a couple of other outstanding instructors to tell us if they will be able to make the event.
So far we have, drum roll please...........
Grand Tuhon Jerson 'Nene' Tortal / Dekti-Tirsia siradas
Grandmaster Alfredo Bandalan / Doce Alfredo Pares Eskrima
Datu Tim Hartman / Modern Arnis - Kombatan - Balintawak Concepts
Guru Samuel Clark / Pencal Silat
Isidro Trajillo / Hawaiian Lua
Sensei Jose Duenas / Danzan Ryu JuJutsu
Guro Ron Kazak / Lucay Lucay Kali / Panantukan
If Nagasulong continues to grow at this rate, it may have to become a 3 day event for next year.
There will also be cash flowing to a charitable organization as always, but John and the other gentlemen do not wish to use it as a marketing tool to promote the event and/or them selves.
p.s. There will be a Sandata / Senjata show at the Nagasulong Championships this year as well.

Yup! That was a great time. I felt at home with everyone there. no one was standoffish or cocky. No ego's or bad attitudes, just one big happy family. People from all over the USA. I remember Prof. Ball the president of the AJJF came all the way in from Ft. Jones, California. And this time around we will be honored with highly talented people from as far as Chile, Negros, Hollist, CA, Hollist, FL Va. Beach, West Seneca (Buffalo), NY and other far away places.
Just can't wait!
Bill's Ginunting trainer came in today too. That thing's just terrible........ It's so front heavy and the handle is so comfortably functional that when you close your eyes you can easily confuse it with the real deal. Please don't tell Kali Cowboy, but I like it just as much as his Talibong trainier that Bill made........
As for the SANDATA SHOW. We will be laying out a few tables to show off the "EYE CANDY". I am even going to let a handful of people do some cutting with a couple of mty antiques. Guro Keith will be bringing his baby, the most awesome Ilonngo Tenegre from Panay I have ever set eyes on.
The blades will be guarded and shown in a well lighted room with one way in and out.
A no touch policy is in effect, unless the blade owner is present to show the blade.
All of the blades will string tagged with a Nagasulong tag which has lines for:
Blade Type
Aprox. Era
Origin
Ethnicity
Owner
Everyone present will be casting ballots to choose the SWEETEST of the EYE CANDY collections.
RULES: The collections will not be judged by size of the collection, expense or cosmetic beauty, but the historical value, rarity, craftmanship and age of each blade will be taken into consideration. You cannot vote on your own collection.
There will be a K.A. prize for the best EYE CANDY(Sandata) collection too.
See everyone there!
God bless, Mike

According to my calculations, there are less than 3 weeks before the Nagasulong Tourney... I wish I could be there to get in some slam and jam time in. But due to mission requirements, one of my students is getting deployed and it looks like another one is on his way out in a while..
In the past month or so, I have had to cut back on training due to job requirements and personal matters.. But things are starting to look on the up and up with the exception of the personal matters that are health oriented.. I am taking a month or so off of training just to get these things situated and that way I can haul my carcass to the Philippines to train with some friends and acquaintances in country...

Just a reminder that we will be auctioning off my old Bagobo Kampilan to donate some cash for a worthy cause. The Kampilan is nearly 36 inches in overall length and is adorned with tiger bells. In case no one has seen my other posting, I started the bidding for this Kampilan off with a bid of $100.00, It is going for a worthwhile project which will be disclosed after a few more phone calls are made by myself.. Christmas is less than 100 days away, so why not get your christmas shopping started early, This Kampilan would look great above someone's desk and since I can't be there, if I win the Kampilan, I will authorize it's use for security purposes at the sandata display as no one will get away with appropriating other people's toys..
By the way, according to my calculations, I see less than 2.5 weeks before this top rated tourney, so don't talk smack, come and toe the line, Hell if I can do it at 53 and if Buzz can do it at his decripit old age, what is keeping you younguns from stepping up and toeing the line.. I won't be there so the ems unit can stand down as my walker and o2 tank will be here on gilligan's island with me.

This auction is for an extremly worthy cause near and dear to me so anyone who participates has my sincere gratitude. It is a heartwarming thing you do.
Tournament rules and registration forms are now available on Midway Kodenkan's website as well as for the all day seminar one day prior.
Visit them at http://www.midwaykodenkan.com/ and go to the download page then scroll down for the forms.
We would encourage everyone who can to send in their entry forms early to the school so we can begin organizing the divisions. It would be appreciated. If you can't, just having one filled out in advace of your arrival will help speed up registration. If you've been to some larger events, you know how slow registration can be a drag.:lookaroun

Hello again everyone!
My sincere apologies for the delay on the Kampilan photo. As wealthy as I am working a part-time job to pay for gas to get to my college classes. I will need to have the Arnisador take the photo for me. Since I spend my last $100 bill on books for the Fall semester, instead of that new digital camera I have been dreaming about.
I am truly overwhelmed that the bidding has started before the auction has. It just shows how great the people are that are going out of their way just to share, be together and help each other out. There is clearly NO CONFUSION, that is why so many people in and outside of the FMA's are attending this event. As well as supporting a good friend and great person, that does so much for the martial arts community and asks nothing in return, Guru John Bednarski. And to top it off, everyone attending this year displays the same generous attributes. I will have the pleasure of being surrounded by dozens of talented and positive people. That is the real attraction here........

Wow, thanks Steven. That's great man. The way everyone is contributing to make this event that belongs to all of us and "no one parson ownes", it is sure to be a huge and repetitive success.
We are already planning for next year's FMA / IMA at Midway event. Like this year we all got together and voted on a name for this years tournament. For next year, we are going to accept ideas for the name of next year's event. After the word, phrase or term is agreed upone, the person responsible for coming up with the word, phrase or term we use at the 2009 FMA / IMA @ Midway event will get a K.A. blade for doing so and will be presented at the 2009 event. For instance, the word, phrase or term can be from any SE Asian or from an influental or related culture. Like, Ilonggo, Tausug, Minankabau, Yakan, Naga, Dayak, Sanskrit(Hindustan), Arabic, Ache, Cebuano, Poshtuni, Hawaiian, etc. Like maybe just using the word "fun" in Tagalog, The 2009 FMA / IMA @ Midway Kasa'yahan Championships for example. Might it be YOU?

Wow, this is the most fit name for the tournament & gathering yet. Brother John you win the K.A. blade for the name that encompasses all positive aspects of true martial sportsmanship and brotherhood. I remember the first time I spoke to you and Brother Sam nearly six years ago when you came up with this idea, an open gathering, tournament and seminars for everyone from every fighting style, from every culture on earth. As well as contributing to a worthy cause. Brother John, you are almost soley responsible for bringing so many of us together and asking for nothing in return, as always.

John inveted me to compete a few years ago after meeting him at a seminar with Bill Anderson. I took a risk and made the trip. Those type of risks can open doors on huge new worlds and this was one of those.
Immediately after the tournament (actually before it was done I think) I pledged to John I would give him all the help and support I could going forward. We saw things that clearly and with the same goals.
I've introduced John to as many people in my circle as I can and they have all had the same great things to say.
Keep up the good work John!

Look, I'm not part of this love fest, but I know John, and am good friends with a good friend of his. He is a stand up guy. What he is doing is good for SEA arts and could only lead to bigger and better things for the arts in general. Collegial interaction is GOOD for the development of the arts, period. Given a choice, sight unseen, I'd chose the Midway event because it seems the most likely to support the growth and awareness of SEAMA.
So, if folks want to karate fine, but it looks like John and the rest of you folks are going to be doing good things.

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to tell everyone about the Friday night pre-Pacific Island Gathering (most important)event we are trying to pull together at the last minute. We're talking Thai cuisine here....... Anyone know where the closest Thai resturaunt to Midway is?
Here are the photos of the Bagago Kampilan I will be auctioning for this year's wothy cause. We are trying to give a little something back to our fellow practitioners and/or instructors that have helped us and given so much to us.

As you can see, the hilt has aluminum inlay and is also adorned with brass alloy tiger bells.

That's not a barung. Ironicly the assassin is using a bolo from Leyte, which is where Imelda comes from.

THE ENTIRE GATHERING WAS A TOTAL BLAST!
It was so non stop busy that a few of us decided to sneak out and grab some luch real quick and we missed most od the knife compatition, the day of the tournament.
The seminar day was "KILLER" too. I was working to prepare for the tournament all that day and was not able to get free until the last seminar. But Guro Keith more than made up for my lost time. We did non stop Lamaco double stick drills for over an hour. My arms felt like noodles after that. When I was back in the SANDATA / SENJATA room, I could hear the lether on the pad popping from Guro Ron's Panatukan seminar and the sticks cracking from Datu Tim's Balintawak concepts seminar so I was labeling blades as fast as I could, while trying not to blurt out "not so healthy" words because I was missing out. Got to watch my good friend Pendakar / Maestro Style jam with some Sansabar work too............ Then after hours, Pendakar Mushtaq was give Juru lessons to John that I was DIE'IN to get in on, but had to pack blades.
I played with the practice Brung that Steve made too, it was nice and top heavy like a real one and had almost the exact shape as the Tausug Barung that I gave out a a Sandata Show prize. He made a large Brung and Jawan Keris trainers that I fell in love with.
GM Bandalan was great too. He is highly skilled, hunble and great to be around just like GM Nene. Having 2 grandmasters and several masters was awesome.
CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE SOME FOOTAGE AND PHOTOS ROLLING!

All it takes is a group of people with like mindset and together they can defeat any and all obstacles that pop up on the road to success.. I'm glad that it went as well as I have been reading and that there were some stuff that was included on the seminar that originally wasn't scheduled.. I just wish I could have been there to get in on the training with Master Styles and Guru Mushtaq as it is few and far between when I get to share and learn what little Kuntao and silat I know with such advanced people who can understand my way of teaching... Im glad that John finally got some more hang time with GM Nene and will be looking forward to updates as they occur as the 2009 schedule unfolds..

Also Cole Van Harn only represents team Navadisha at this time. So again ignore my earlier post somewhat. I do believe all else is correct, If not I will be posting again.

After having had a week to think about what went down, I thought I'd give my quick review of how the tournament went.
I thought it was a fantastic success.
Enough competitors to make for sporting divisions (though we'd like to see even more) and enough senior masters and GM's to give the rest of us a thrill.
Once we started matchups we realized we were once again on Filipino time but we tried to keep a relaxed pace while still trying to move things
along for those participating.
We had early demonstrations of Arnis Sikaran Sandatahan as well as Commando Krav Maga.
There was a lengthy review of the rules to make sure there was complete understanding of how the scoring was to be made. We thought this was pretty well covered but we've since learned there may still be some unclearness for some folks so lessons learned will be to have some example fights demonstrated next year. I'd like to give a personal thank-you here to Datu Hartman for sharing (what seemed excessive at the time) his insights into distinct particulars in the rules. Knowing he has been involved in many tournaments and seen some of the pitfalls that can occur I appreciated his willingness to ask for clarification of what seemed obvious to me.
There was some pretty spirited fights. At one point I recall two fighter's sticks aligned perfectly and it was as if the air exploded in front of me. There was some pretty serious power and speed displayed. And yet displayed with the utmost respect of fair play and for the opponent.
By all accounts (meaning we've mostly heard the good ones:wink2:) everyone was pretty happy with the outcome and if they didn't win, for the most part they felt that things were run well and that the judging was pretty good. Of course there's always room for improvement. We're all human and it's a game/tournament.
Both GM Alfredo Bandalan and GT Nene Tortal did enlightening demonstrations of their styles and there was a surprise demonstration of live blade espada y daga by Master Styles (high point for me).
All first place winners of adult fight divisions won live blade weapons with the exception of one who opted for carved kamagong sticks.
Oh, and did I mention the antique Sandata display?!?!?!?!?!?!!??
Unbelieveble. Won this time hands down by Master Styles who brought out the big barungs.
Both myself and Mushtaq are setting a goal of being healed and back in shape to fight next year. I'll probably join the adult division since there's no way I'm facing him in Masters!
Mushtaq wanted to give props to Datu Hartman for his example of skill and good sportsmanship as well.
It was great fun to see everyone again and as always make some more new friends.
Teen Sword: 1st place - Mariah Moore (Navadisha Jornales Arnis)
1st place - Brandon Cash (Bandalan Doce Pares Escrima)
2nd place - Robert Sepe (Bandalan Doce Pares Escrima)
Again, my apologies to Brandon for the mistake.

Yes, we are speaking of a very close friend of mine that I am proud to call my "Brother", whom a refer to on FMA Talk as Pendakar. Hmm, a man of many names.
If everyone is wondering what the confustion on titles and names is about, it is because Master Style is a master of several different sytems and is the ranking member for both of his family systems, from both sides of his family.
As for the speeling discrepancies, they are actually not. I just choose to use Master Style's more traditional last name and title. Spelled and pronounced slightly different depending on what region of the Philippines you are in. For instance, my traditional last name is "Schnee", but here in the US my family goes by "Snow", even my dialect is spelled and pronounced differntly in the US compared to Germany they still contain the same meaning. This is acually more common of an occurence than one might think.
God Bless, Mike
Hello Everyone,
On a postive note, I would now like too give my small review of everything. The Seminars and tournament went really well all things considered. Seminar day was intense, and friendly. My special thanks go ot to the instructors whom gave it their all in the name of Friendship and solidarity. Gramdmaster Alfredo Bandalan, Guro Brent Cash and Guro John Cipkur, Grand Tuhon Jerson "Nene" Tortal, Datu Tim Hartman, Kumu Lua Isidro Trajillo, Guru Samuel Clark, and Guro Keith Wetoskey And Master Nagarajen.
Day two the tournament... Everybody came to fight, but none had an ego issue. The judging was fair and competent and the winners deserve much praise for their accomplishments. Later demonstrations were given in Krava Maga, Bandalan Doce Pares (by Grandmaster Bandalan Himself!) Dekiti Tirsia Siradas kali (by Grand Tuhon Jerson "Nene" Tortal Himself!) and a display of Espada Y Daga by Master Nagarajen whom would have rather not done one, but whom I thank ever so much for doing it anyway....This was a watershed moment in the Midwest for FMA I hope all can try too support next year. Soon, we will be posting dates and other information!
Special Thanks to all who worked hard to make this event special! Guro Mike Snow, Guro Steve Van Harn, Mushtaq Ali Al-Ansari, Mariah Moore, Stephen Shy and Jose Duenas!
Thanks to everyone,
John

Thanks, I have had some good input from my good friend and teacher from the Southern Philippines. My meeting him has been a God Send. I am trying to make my scabbards, sheaths and bags as true as possible. I know I have a long way to go but I will get it right. I am going to Negros next March and I plan to do some research on the leather designs while I am there.
God Bless,
Stephen
