Hi Guys,

I'll be teaching a short class on small knife tactics at the New England Bladesmiths Guild seminar on Sept 20th.

If you are interested in making knives, this is a great seminar to attend. The whole thing runs from Friday night on the 19th through Sunday afternoon on the 21st.

This past Saturday I gave a one hour defensive tactics mini-class at the New England Bladesmiths Guild 27th annual seminar. I've been giving these classes at this event for the last dozen or so years and enjoy the interaction between blade users and blade makers. The seminar runs from Friday night through Sunday afternoon and each presenter gets an hour for his demo, lecture or class. This year my topic was “Using a Small Pen Knife for Self Defense.” Not everyone carries a full sized folder. If all you have to defend yourself is a small pen knife, (like this stockman folder: http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=SCH104OT ) then its a case of something is better than nothing.
I taught the knifemakers a few basic Pekiti-Tirsia techniques strung into a short chain of entry (ganunting hit), parry (a technique from knife tapping), control (a wrist lock using the knife to clip) and hit (a thrust using the knife in a “sharpfinger” grip).

Here's the Ashokan webpage and the description of my class from it.

Bill McGrath is our answer man for what to do with the finished knives in the most serious of circumstances. Bill’s skill with a blade makes him the guy you would want next to you in a dark alley in any of the roughest areas in the world when all you have is a pocket knife. This year he will show how to get the most out of a pen knife in a life and death situation. Too many modern “tactical” knives are simply designed on paper with the styles being strictly a visual thing; this is a knifemakers golden opportunity to get insight into actual self defense knife use from somebody who really knows his stuff.

It's the kind of knife you often get as a gift--my father-in-law handed them out like candy. I must have a dozen lying around the house but never carry them! But, I do usually have my tiny keychain knife with me. Indeed, you have to (be prepared to) work with what you have!
