Greetings--
With all of the negativity creeping about the forum at times, this is a great opportunity to examine the Pekiti-Tirsia system without the burden of political charge or ego. Much has been said about Pekiti-Tirsia knife...but the other 'crown jewel' of the system is its espada y daga.
I plan on being there myself and look forward to meeting any forum members at this event.
By the way, Tuhon McGrath is a superlative teacher and practitioner. But you can see for yourself.
Regards,
Jack A. Latorre

Sounds like a fun training session. I will not be able to be there because I have some MMA fighters that will be fighting and my son who is a grappling chmapion has his event all around the same time. Some day I will meet Bill Mc Grath though.

Thanks for the message. Best of luck to your fighters, including your son.
I'm glad you intend to meet Tuhon Bill - as Jack Latorre already stated (and I know I'm biased...) he really is quite skilled at both the art and teaching the art.
Take care.

Man I would LOVE to attend this seminar!!! I have heard only GREAT things about Tuhon McGrath, and I would really enjoy meeting and training with him!
Unfortunately, this year my schedule will not permit me to attend the summer camp. Is this a yearly event? If so, I will definitely start to plan from now to see if I can attend next year.
To all who go, have a great time!! ( I'm sure you will!! )
Cheers!!

Abdon--
Typically, this IS a yearly event...with the section of curriculum being taught rotated or decided upon based on request or need. Sometimes the focus is on the single stick curriculum, sometimes its knife...it's all good stuff.
And the great things you hear about Tuhon McGrath? They are probably true. :)
Respectfully,
Jack A. Latorre

I find working with all the old timers really puts PTK in that much more perspective for me. A good martial art has individual taste and seeing all those tastes helps me find my own taste. I know this is sort of a JKD phylosophy more or less but even in JKD, I found working with all the original guys helped me out in seeing the true history of the style and understand it better than someone who did not do that. Did it make me a better fighter? Hmmm...maybe!

Greetings All--
As the PTI Summer Camp approaches (in less than two weeks), are there any forum members that plan on attending? It would be good to have an informal "meet and greet", with all of the quality training to boot. The camp info says the training ends at 7pm but that doesn't mean any interested parties couldn't perhaps get together for notes, additional training, tales, et cetera.
Since Wes Tasker will not be able to attend, we will take pity on him that he did not get the "super-secret salient techniques" that we will all be exposed to. Tsk-tsk...the shame of it all.
Best,
Jack A. Latorre

Two things-
1 - You were just looking for an excuse to use some awesome and adroit alliteration...
2 - You're still jealous of my tan......

"This is Wes. We've been teaching him wrong as a joke!
Wewewewewewewewewewewewe......"
Seriously - Wes would be wildly welcomed if he weren't wedded to another weekend. I'm going to try to make the last day.

Please post some feedback for us poor souls who were unable to attend!!
Also, if possible, pictures would be great!!!
I have already begun planning for next year's camp...if all goes well, I WILL BE THERE!!! (God willing!)

I arrived on Sunday for the last day of camp. The camp was being held under one of the large pavilions at Bowdoin State Park in Dutchess County, New York, due to some intermittent rain showers in the morning. This is a large, beautiful park overlooking the Hudson River. When I arrived there was a large group in attendence and spirits were high; you could hear laughter from 1/4 mile away as you approached the pavilion.
The curriculum for the day included the single knife versions of the single stick abcdario and the abcedario de mano. Tuhon McGrath focussed on the first slap set of the abcedario de mano and demonstrated how the techniques could be conceived in three ways: (a) you're attacked by a single person but reasonably believe that this could be a set-up for a multiple attack, i.e, an ambush or mugging; you perform the technique and retreat strategically as you employ your CCW, (b) you're attacked by someone and perceive that they are carrying a weapon; you perform the technique and take the weapon away before they can draw it, (c) the single knife version of the slap sets. Later that afternoon Tuhon McGrath demonstrated the first fist set of the abcedario de mano.
Magino'o Guro Mike Popolizio (http://www.pekiti.com/contactlist.php#us) taught a set of knife techniques for self defense in the case worse-case scenarios such as home invasions. Mike's many years of experience with the NYPD were evident. His focus was on lethal, practical techniques that allowed you to permanently stop the closest attacker and move on to the next one without getting tied up in a grappling situation. Mike also led an informal seminar about how judges and juries can view the legality of the knives that we use for every day carry (most knives that look and feel as if they were made specifically for self-defense are viewed poorly) and how severely the legal system treats a knife fight in all but the most extreme self-defense situations. "You'll be making that knife in prison" was an oft-heard refrain.
There were several LEO's in attendence, which helped focus the training and give it the sobriety it deserved. I thought that the skill-level of the martial artists there was quite high and appreciated the lack of the "wild-eye crazy" factor that sometimes occurs in similar training situations. There was also a writer from one of the major martial arts magazines attending the camp. It looked as though he had a great time and I hope to see the article published in the future.
Best,
Steve Lamade

Thank you for such an excellent review of the camp!
Sounds like alot of fun, a lot of great training, as well as a lot of practical material that was given out. The legal aspect as well as awareness of possible repercussions of using a bladed weapon, even for self defense, is an area which definitely needs to be covered in our training, especially in this day and age.
Sounds like the camp was about as complete as you can get with regards to true training!!!
Again, thanks for the review, and I will hopefully see you there next year!!!

Tuhon McGrath with some of the gents from my group.
For those interested...I believe it was a good time had by all. Many attendees had overload each day, but that's the nature of what we do. One ends up learning more than they think they do. The review might be better served by someone other than myself, as I am heavily partial.
Sorry our paths didn't cross this time Steve, but there's always something else down the road.

I was at the camp all four days. The instruction was excellent. I was befuddled and perplexed at times but I was never bored. The material was very technical but Tuhon Bill and Jack Latorre were very patient and always willing to show you "just one more time". I would recommend the camp very highly.
