US-based Cebuano earns best teacher award from Wekaf (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/02/11/sports/us.based.cebuano.earns.best.teacher.award.from.wek af.html)
CEBUANO Eskrima Master Erwin Mosqueda will finally have his sacrifice pay off as he is set to receive the Instructor of the Decade Award during the Doce Pares Annual Awards, in April at Cornwall City, United Kingdom.
The Los Angeles City-based Mosqueda, will take the highest accolade awarded by the world-renowned Doce Pares International. Mosqueda is Doce Pares head instructor in the US, the second highest master in the US after New Jersey-based Master Arnulfo “Dong” Cuesta, who is the World Headquarters Dean of Instructors.
Mosqueda, who is from Mambaling, Cebu City, grabbed the award for his dedicated training and propagation of the Filipino martial art since 1977. He learned the basic art from Doce Pares founding president Eulogio Sr., Ciriaco and Felimon Cañete.
According to Doce Pares Grandmaster and lawyer Dioniso “Diony” Cañete, Mosqueda bagged the award for his unselfish dedication to the art.
I have not been able to find results of the January competition on-line! An older story (from 5 July 2005):
Diony: We will get back Wekaf title in Orlando (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2005/07/05/sports/diony.we.will.get.back.wekaf.title.in.orlando.html )
After losing the overall title to USA in last year’s 8th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation Championships in home soil, grandmaster Diony Cañete wants to return the favor in next year’s edition in Orlando, Florida.
“If we can field 80 to 90 fighters, we have a chance we’ll regain the overall crown,” Cañete said. “USA fielded an entry each in each category while we didn’t, that’s why they won the overall trophy.”

The Lowerhouses 13-year-old won both fighting and forms titles at the recent British Escrima Championships (stick fighting) for the third year in succession, although they have come at different age groups, the latest being Under 16.

The Lowell Middle School seventh-grader is headed to Orlando, Fla., the first week in July to compete in the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation Stick-Fighting Championships.
Four years ago, the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids' Lowell Branch offered a class in the Japanese style of Kyokushinkai Ro-Ken karate.
"I started taking karate classes because I wanted to do a sport, and I was looking for one I would be good at," Mariah said. "I tried cheerleading, soccer ... they just didn't feel right. I knew as soon as I started karate that it was in my heart."
Stick-fighting involves using a stick, cane or sword. The goal is to disarm an opponent.
Mariah trains mostly in Lowell with Aaron Bailey She is the highest ranking student and helps teach younger students. She also trains in Holland two nights a week with Bong Jornales.

UC withdraws from Arnis World Championship in Florida (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/07/05/sports/uc.withdraws.from.arnis.world.championship.in.flor ida.html)
The University of Cebu (UC) arnis team may have earned visas from the American Embassy, but the team hit another snag, preventing its participation in the Word Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Wekaf) Championships in Orlando, Florida — financial shortage.
UC and Wekaf had earlier agreed to work hand in hand to send a delegation for the championships.
However, three days prior to the departure of the 39-man delegation, Wekaf announced it failed to raise enough money for airfare to send everyone and that someone has to be left behind.
“That is why we from UC decided that we will just skip the international meet,” Bernard Ricablanca, who serves as team manager, said.

I just got back from the WEKAF World Tournament. Unfortunately, I was only able to be there during the Invitationals. I heard there were over 200 competitors during the week.
Tom will be in Orlando until will be in Orlando until Wednesday. I would expect the results to be posted some time after.
As far as the Invitationals, it went extremely well. There weren't a lot of people left, but the ones that stayed to compete an watch were top notch. Teams from Italy, Germany, Australia, Canada, plus about 15-20 others partcipated. The new padded stick division was a great success! I'll have videos posted on our website shortly.

RP bags 13 golds (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/07/14/sports/rp.bags.13.golds.html)
Decimated by lack of funds, the RP Team to the 9th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Wekaf) Championships dwindled to only nine, after five fighters were ruled out from competing due to various illness and jetlag.
Still, the nine-man RP team, which lost eight members from the University of Cebu prior to the tournament, managed to haul 13 medals and in a classic David vs. Goliath battle, defeated the Germans in the team contest, where each country fields their three top fighters.
"The Men's team of Henry Cabellion, Rodolfo and Randy Angeles, whose total weight was only 370 pounds defeated the German team led by 6 foot 5 fighter and two other six footers, who weigh a total of 650 pounds.

Gonzales, an employee at the Woodland Post Office, has been surprised by his rapid rise in a mere 15 months in the martial art.

Alto girl eanrs world championships in martial arts
(http://www.mlive.com/sports/advancenewspapers/index.ssf?/base/sports-3/1153167648198530.xml&coll=10)
Moore, a 12-year-old from Alto, earned the world championship in Traditional Multiple Weapons and in Full Contact Light-weight Double-stick Fighting.
Moore's first competition was in Traditional Multiple Weapons, where she executed a flawless form with her signature Kris Swords. A panel of five judges score from 1-10, with a 5 the average score for a well-executed form finished without error. The lowest and the highest scores are dropped and the remaining three are averaged. Moore's scores were 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, and 9.5, tallying up to a solid 8.5, giving her a sizeable lead above competitors and earning her the gold medal for the U.S. National Team and her first world championship.
On July 4, Moore competed in the Light-weight division of Full Contact Double-Stick Fighting. Surpassing Italy, Germany, Australia, Great Britain, the Philippines, and Canada, her most fierce competitor would be her own USA teammate, Jane Noval of Sacramento, Calif. Moore suffered pain to her ribs in the third round, but refused to step down, insisting that her coaches allow her to finish.
Judges ordered a fourth, and unprecedented round of fighting, termed "sudden death." The other five rings of competition came to a virtual standstill to watch what was termed "The Best Fight of the Day."
"I have never seen her fight like that. It was incredible. Mariah came out in the fourth and tiebreaking round on fire. She dominated like she was 9 feet tall and bullet proof," said Randy Moore .
At the end of the fourth round of fighting, the center judge brought both competitors to the center of the ring. The crowd erupted with approval as the judge raised Moore's arm, indicating she had won the gold for the United States and what would be her second world title.
In training for the World Championships, Grand Master Bong Jornales had secretly conditioned Mariah for 1?nute rounds. When she got to the championships and the rounds were 1 minute long, the strategy paid off, giving her a necessary edge in physical conditioning.

Fighting her way (http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/broomfield_news/article/0,1713,BDC_2495_4928306,00.html)
That love of the ring has translated into an impressive career for the Aspen Creek K-8 School eighth-grader. Albeit, a short one, at this point. In the year Michaelis has been involved with the discipline, she collected several championships.
Most recently, Michaelis added world titles to her accomplishments. She won the single and double stick fighting titles at the World Eskrima Stick Fighting Competition July 2-8 in Orlando, Fla.
An impressive accomplishment in itself, even more so considering it was only her third competition.
A bit of hyperbole here:
[...]Doce Pares.
The discipline is the world's most popular branch of Eskrima — or the Filipino martial art of fighting with a stick or sword. And it's a potent fighting style, at that. Filipinos defeated Ferdinand Magellan's sword-wielding Conquistadors using the discipline, during the Portuguese 1519-1521 voyage around the world.

It took them two years to defeat the Portuguese! What kind of martial art is that?
