I noticed that Pencak Silat appears in sport listings in many Filipino papers, and Buwaya appears to confirm that (http://fmatalk.com/showthread.php?p=2476#post2476). Could someone describe this for me?

Cut and pasted from the website of the last SEA(South East Asian) Games that recently past in Cebu and Manilla;

"The Philippine Pencak Silat Association is the governing body for the sport of pencak silat in the Philippines. It is a private sports organization, recognized as the National Sport Association (NSA) for pencak silat.
The Philippine Pencak Silat Association is a regular member of the Philippine Olympic Committee."

PHILSILAT is the shortened name for the Philippine Pencak Silat Association. Its the Philippine equilent of IPSI and is recognized by PERSILAT.

To see what it looks like visit http://www.kpsnusantara.com/rapid/competition_maneuvers_keluarga_v7_n1/competition_maneuvers_keluarga_v7_n1.htm

PHILSILAT was founded in 1990 and brought to the country by Sultan Jamallul Kiram III.

Pencak silat is not an indigenous term(and was not even indigenous to Indonesia before the 1950's). Silat is indigenous to Mindanao but the silat taught at PHILSILAT is Indonesian.

In one of the pages in the link I posted, you can see Abdul Karim Jabad, who is one of the natitional coaches of the sport in Manilla.

Ah, thanks! Is it forms competition only, then?

Silat Seni is forms competition, Silat Olahraga is fighting. I beleive there are other categories as well.

The gentlmen in the first picture on the last SEA Games website are competing in Silat Olahraga, http://www.cebuseagames.com/ .

I've seen Silat Seni forms performed but I have yet to see a Olahraga match so am in no position to describe it. I know that strikes to the face are not allowed. I've heard it described as Taekwondo with takedowns. A common application is to catch an attacking leg and then offbalance and throw your opponent.
