An article on the new FMA Circle of Negros Island (http://fmacircle.ph.tc) web site for Negros Island martial arts organizations.

Preventing panic firing (http://www.inq7.net/nwsbrk/2002/jun/25/nbk_3-1.htm)

A brief mention of arnis in a longer article about police training. "This year, he says they are going to carry out a more rigorous training program that will provide graduates with the eight specialized skills every police officer should have: firearms proficiency, use of the pro baton, arnis, unarmed combat or aikido, arresting and handcuffing, crowd dispersal, chanting, and drill mastering."

A 2003 story on the re-enactment of the death of Ferdinand Magellan at the hands of Lapu-Lapu. "The rest of the cast is composed of more than 400 actors from different Mactan barangays and the stick fighters of the Mactan Island Eskrima Alliance. "

Boxers on gold romp as Games wind down (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2005/dec/04/yehey/top_stories/20051204top3.html)

A story on several sports from the SEAG (Southeast Asian Games) last month. "In Manila, the Filipino arnis exponents did not disappoint hometown fans by sweeping the men’s and women’s arnis anyo (form) two-sticks contests. Arnis made its first appearance in the meet as a medal sport."

A somewhat rambling (cached) article on the FMA; one of the few to mention dumog though.

Grapplers dominate Reality Combat fights; boxers routed (http://216.239.51.104/custom?q=cache:Gg5fpTaw5vwJ:www.manilatimes.net/national/2003/apr/20/sports/20030420spo2.html+buno&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)

Similarly, it's rare to see Buno mentioned in an article (cached).

Representing the Philippines for the third time, to this prestigious gathering is the Davao City-based Mandirigmang Kaliradman (MK). Established in 1998 by Master Instructor Manolo “Nols” Luis del Rosario in Davao City, Philippines, Mandirigmang Kaliradman aims to instill National Pride and Cultural Identity among Filipinos through the preservation and propagation of traditional Filipino Martial Arts (Kali-Escrima-Arnis).

[...]

In 1992, Master Nols began his studies in the Warrior Arts of the Philippines under the late Maestro Elmer Ybanez of Lema Scientific Kali-Arnis Sys-tem (LESKAS). He was granted his instructorship rank under LESKAS six years later. When Master Ybanez migrated to the United States in 1998, Master Nols continued his studies under grandmaster Benjamin Lema of Light-ning Scientific Arnis International.

[...]

MK will be demonstrating the Lightning Scientific Arnis System. This system hails from the island of Panay in the Visayas and was first taught by the late Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema of Mambusao, Capiz. It is a fast, graceful and powerful system which encompasses four major styles of Kali-Escrima-Arnis. These include “Tercia,” in reference to close or “one-thirds” fighting range; “Serrada,’ in reference to a close range checking or jamming approach; “Cadenilya,” the fluid linking of strikes and blocks without pause; and “Espada y Daga” or the concurrent use of a long and short weapon.

DepEd arnis seminar held (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ilo/2006/09/19/sports/deped.arnis.seminar.held.html)

The purpose of the seminar was to orient PE teachers on Arnis officiating, update Arnis officials of the latest rules in sport Arnis, and enrich knowledge on the conduct of DepEd Arnis competition.

Arnis is the national martial art of the Philippines as recognized by the Filipino Government, previously governed nationally by the National Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL) by then Chief of Staff Fabian Ver and today by the arnis Philippines under the leadership of its President Raymund Velayo.

Arnis is a generic term applied to the hundreds of traditions, forms, styles, and systems of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), whether indigenous, eclectic, and foreign based, scattered all over the 7, 100 islands of the Philippine archipelago.

Arnis is a corrupted Spanish term which means “armor, mail, or protective bracelet.” When applied to FMA, it refers to one’s ability to defend oneself as if one is wearing an armor.

It is variously known as escrima/eskrima, baston, olisi, garrote, estoque, estokada, etc. in various parts of the country. Hon. Juan Miguel Zubiri had authored a bill that makes Arnis the National Sport of the Philippines.

Modern Arnis, the Philippine Art of Stick and Knife Fighting (http://pinoycentric.com/2007/06/25/modern-arnis-the-philippine-art-of-stick-and-knife-fighting/)

[The Philippine martial art of modern Arnis is composed of stick fighting techniques developed by the Muslim Sultans of the Tausug tribe on the island of Mindanao. Earlier versions of the art were called Kali or escrima, names still used in Mindanao today. Arnis is typically thought of as a sick fighting art, but many Philippine martial arts masters practice Kuntaw, a complete fighting system, including kicks, punches, locks, throws, manipulations, and stick fighting.

“The Muslims never surrendered to the Spanish.” Explains Kyud Dennis Santos, a fourth degree black belt, and the leading teacher of Arnis in Puerto Princesa, Palawan Island. “The Datu chief, Lapu-Lapu, used the ancient art to defeat Magellan at the battle of Mactan.”

“The Muslim masters taught much of the art to the Christians, but they held some back for themselves, just in case.”

In Arnis it is important to call people by respectful titles, such as Kyud (brother), master or maestro. Although Dennis is the teacher, he only requires his students to call him Kyud, brother, to remind them that we are all students.

A new student will first begin his training with a single stick. Later he will learn two sticks, then two blades, and finally, bare hands.
I don't think he means Modern Arnis in the sense of Remy Presas' system.

THE WAY OF CACOY’S STICK. Doce Pares Grand Master Ciriaco “Cacoy” Cañete has taught his brand of the indigenous Filipino Martial Art of Eskrima (Arnis to the people of Luzon) to countless people through the series of seminars he holds every year.

Not everybody can see the 88-year-old Grand Master at work though, as most of his seminars nowadays are held abroad. And whenever he is here, he only practices with a select few – mostly his highest-ranking students and his grandkids.

But ‘Noy Cacoy is publishing a book that will make it possible for those genuinely interested to learn the rudiments of his Doce Pares system in the comforts of home and to develop from there through sparring with an equally dedicated partner.

In a time where foreign martial arts schools outnumber FMA institutions, we are thankful for old warriors like ‘Noy Cacoy for keeping such an important part of Filipino history, culture and identity as Eskrima alive.

In other countries, their local martial arts are taught to schoolchildren by competent teachers. The teachers need to go through a series of trainings before they can actually teach the craft. And this is what Doce Pares has in mind in putting up the academy.

“What was once an ordinary club has evolved into an educational institution. Now arnis is being organized by an academy, which is under the educational system of the Philippines,” said Silvano Maranga, Tesda Region 11 director, who attended the launching yesterday at the NS Pension.

“This form of martial art that was started by the sons of Lapu-Lapu is very rich in history and culture. It teaches skills that came from our ancestors. And it is good to know that we will be assured that it will be handed down to our younger generation,” Maranga added.

Quijano: School’s in (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2008/07/08/sports/quijano.school.s.in.html)

BACK in the 90’s when I was a skinny sophomore at UP Diliman—the angry young man that I thought I was, I had the gumption to take up “Arnis” as my Physical Education subject.

To my chagrin, I realized that I was no good at it and my swollen knuckles were damning evidence at how incompetent I was going to be as a Doce Pares enthusiast.

On hindsight, I assign all that to the imprudence of my youth, but I couldn’t help but recall that at time I indeed wondered if a better method of instruction or probably a more serious, lasting approach to the art was needed.

Just recently, Atty. Dionisio Canete, President of the Doce Pares Inc., founded the Academy of Eskrima Inc., touted to be the first ever formal school of Filipino martial arts.

Make policemen use the ‘batuta’ (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/metro/view/20080710-147488/Make-policemen-use-the-batuta)

With so many policemen being disarmed by New People’s Army guerrillas, policemen in remote towns should no longer be allowed to carry guns.
Instead, they should be made to tote batuta or nightsticks, which have no use for the NPAs.

Police stations in remote towns are the source of guns of the NPAs.

Policemen in remote towns or barangays run away or don’t put up a fight when rebels raid their places.

Making policemen use nightsticks will force them to learn the rudiments of arnis or Filipino stickfighting in handling troublemakers.

ASK me to swing a tennis racket, dribble an orange ball, swat a shuttlecock or jog a 10-K and I’m fine. But, the one sport that I admit complete ignorance on is the one activity that’s revered by millions: Martial Arts.

Aikido, karatedo, judo, taekwondo, and many more ‘Do’s that include Kendo, Hapkido, Jukendo—they are aplenty. Add one more type of combat that’s venerated from the UK to the US and, above all, in Cebu....

Eskrima. Kali. Arnis.

The three are one. They’re the same. Or so I learned when, last Tuesday night and together with my fellow scribes from the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC), we trooped to a home that is a mecca of martial arts.

Doce Pares.

Located at No. 31 Eagle St. of Sto. Niño Village in Banilad, the name “Doce Pares” is admired in the world of Filipino martial arts.

The World Eskrima-Kali-Arnis Federation World Championships, to be held in the Philippines July 22-25, promise to be noteworthy for several reasons. One is that the contest marks the 10th anniversary celebrating this indigenous Filipino martial art on a global scale. Another is that it marks a homecoming for two of its long-time practitioners: Jimmy Robles and Joe “the Volcano” Behic. Both are of Filipino descent traveling to their ancestral homeland for the very first time.

THE headline in yesterday’s sports section said it all. We were embarrassed at home.

Team USA captured its third straight win at the Word Eskrima-Kali-Arnis Federation (Wekaf) Championships. This year’s event closed at the Ayala Center Cebu last Saturday.

The Americans, wrote Sun.Star Cebu scribe Marian C. Baring, rallied themselves and harvested 10 more gold medals in day three, bringing their total haul to 44 golds, 35 silvers and 30 bronzes at closing.

Team Philippines could only get 35 golds, 18 silvers and 19 bronzes despite playing at home.

After failing to secure the title in their own backyard, the country's endless search for the overall crown in the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Wekaf) Championships will take them to Mexico, who won the right to host the biennial event in 2010 during the organization's world congress which was held last week.

Take the Americans. In all, they sent a 110-strong team. The British? Dozens. Same with 23 other nations. And though we fielded a squad that reached a hundred, you can see how popular stick-fighting has grown outside RP soil. In all, about 100 who joined the event were Filipinos—compared to 500 foreigners!

Which led former judo champion Nimrod Quiñones, the managing editor of The Freeman, to conclude: “Arnis is RP’s top export.”

They wore a gray polo shirt, long pants, black shoes, a beret with tassels, an arnis stick and a handcuff. They were also sporting military haircuts.

Antonio Graceffo's Martial Arts Odyssey is a voyage of discovery of national heritage (http://www.foreignpolicyjournal.com/articles/2009/04/03/calleja_martial-arts-odyssey.html)

Graceffo’s Kuntaw instructor, Grandmaster Frank Ayococho, resides in Manila. Previously, Ayococho taught martial arts, Arnis (Filipino knife fighting), and first aid at the University of Manila School of Arnis Professionals. He laments the fact that Filipino martial arts are more famous outside of his native Philippines. “The Department of Education has declared that only Taekwondo can be taught in academy schools,” he explains. “What about our ancient Filipino martial arts? They forget about this.” The Grandmaster remarks that a colonial mentality has allowed imported martial arts, such as Taekwondo, to become more popular than Kuntaw.

Elements of one martial art are often incorporated into other forms. Grandmaster Ayococho notes that the art of Kali is becoming more influential in Taekwondo, but doesn't believe that this will negatively affect the number of people taking up Filipino martial arts at home or abroad. “The popularity of Kali and Arnis in particular has weakened Taekwondo, in the sense that we keep introducing Arnis classes to some high school and college students nationwide.”

Bill seeks to make arnis national sport (http://sports.inquirer.net/breakingnews/breakingnews/view/20091124-238098/Bill-seeks-to-make-arnis-national-sport)

Arnis, the Filipino martial art which uses rattan sticks as weapons, is on the verge of being formally declared the Philippines’ national sport.

The House of Representatives has already approved on third and final reading a bill declaring Arnis as the national sport and transmitted it to the Senate where arnis enthusiast, Senator Miguel Zubiri, was expected to take the lead in its approval.

South Cotabato Rep. Arthur Pingoy Jr., the main author of House Bill 6516, said arnis deserved to be hailed as the national sport considering that it has evolved as a distinct martial art along with judo karate and taekwondo.

Pingoy said it was about time to elevate arnis considering that it has spawned avid practicioners not only in the Philippines but also in other countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, among others, where international Arnis federations and organizations have mushroomed.

Negros Oriental Rep. Pryde Henry Teves said that the bill would finally address the "collective sentiment to put arnis in its rightful historical place in the country."

Once enacted into law, Teves said that the arnis symbol would be inscribed as a symbol into the official seal of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and included as one of the official sports in the Palarong Pambansa.

A documentary on the Filipino martial arts (http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/lifestyle/10016-eskrimadors)

Timely, with the passing of the Arnis bill that finally made arnis into a national martial art and sport, is the release of "Eskrimadors," a documentary film about the Filipino martial arts (FMA) by Cebuano production outfit Pointsource Films.

The term eskrimador means, “a practitioner of eskrima.” While arnis is the generic term for the FMA in Luzon, in the Visayas, particularly in the island of Cebu, it is better known as eskrima. “This film came about when we were looking for a project that was uniquely Cebuano in scope and identity, but had the capability to reach out to a worldwide audience,” says Kerwin Go, the producer and director of the film.

Tribute to ‘eskrimadors’
Go describes Eskrimadors as a hybrid documentary incorporating historical facts and interviews with action scenes. “There is a little storyline woven into the documentary. We interviewed all of the well-known figures within the Cebu eskrima circle and made reenactments based on their stories,” he narrates.

The eskrima masters featured in the film are Ciriaco “Cacoy” Cañete, Dionisio “Diony” Cañete and Undo Caburnay.

In addition, "Eskrimadors" offers a sneak peak into the deadly techniques of the eskrima styles of Doce Pares, Lapunti Arnis de Abanico, Teovel’s Balintawak, Nickelstick Balintawak and Liborio Heyrosa Decuerdas.

At least four of Cebu's legendary grandmasters of Eskrima will do a live demonstration of their skills as the curtain raiser of tomorrow's premier of a documentary film about this unique Filipino form of martial arts.

“Eskrimadors” was filmed in Cebu, where the fighting art flourished and gained notoriety in the early 1950s and '60s, then became popular worldwide when Bruce Lee promoted it through movies and seminars in the '70s.

The documentary, which traces the origins and growth of Eskrima, also known as “kali” and “arnis”, includes interviews with grandmasters Ciriaco “Cacoy” Canete, Dionisio Canete, Undo Caburnay, and Nicomedes Elizer, among others.

Arnis training camp turns into a profitable business (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/enterprise/view/20100426-266532/Arnis-training-camp-turns-into-a-profitable-business)

The Cañetes and Abesamis' of Cebu, who put up the Doce Pares Zipline, the first in the province, never intended to make it a business venture.

Engr. Michael Cañete said they first developed the area in the mountain barangay of Busay, Cebu city as a training area for their organization, Doce Pares, which is promoting “eskrima,” a type of Filipino martial art that emphasizes fighting using sticks, knife or staf as weapons. It is more popularly known as “kali” or “arnis.”

Being an engineer and operating their own land development company, Meadow Land Developers, Inc., with the help of Abesamis' company that's into construction and drilling, they were able to develop the area where they erected a zip line to use for aerial combat demonstrations.

“We have a pool of designers and engineers who helped us design the zip line. So one cannot say that we just made the zip line without expert help. We also have to think of our members’ safety when using it,” he said.
