Arnis: A real Pinoy martial art (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bag/2002/08/25/feat/arnis.a.real.pinoy.martial.art.html)

Abby Nestor,an eighth-grader at Hingham Middle School, recently scored third place in the "Gi" division of a world-wide grappling tournament in New Jersey. Grappling is similar to wrestling in that you fight your opponent to achieve dominant positions and finally to submission. Abby has earned her black belt in the Philipino art of "Doce Pares Eskrima" from EEMA Fitness and Martial Arts in Weymouth. Abby is grateful to her instructor Guru Jason Silverman, her family and friends for all their encouragement and support.
She won a grappling tournament and the only art they mention is Doce Pares? I wonder if she also studies Judo or BJJ or the like?

Warrior ethos (http://www.fayettevillenc.com/article?id=228016)
A U.S. Army brigadier general teaches escrima to his troops in NC:
On Wednesday mornings, [BGEN] Leonard spends time during physical training trying to build up “warrior spirit” with escrima, a martial art brought to the United States by Filipinos and encountered by the U.S. Army around 1900 in the Philippines. The concepts include balance, focus, speed, timing and power.
“The whole idea is hand-eye coordination, warrior spirit, what does it take?” he said afterward. “How do we focus on learning to fight, learning to move? What are the dynamics of that fighting and movement?”
In each hand, the soldiers had a wooden dowel rod slightly longer than their forearms. The gym echoed with the sound of sticks striking each other as the soldiers practiced.
Leonard talked about timing and balance and unpredictability as he went through motions with the sticks.
On an unrelated note, this story (http://english.people.com.cn/200603/22/eng20060322_252659.html) talks about Russian President Vladimir Putin's trip to China and discusses his Judo background and a Shaolin kung fu demonstration.

Greetings All - In regard to this post, we teach the full system of Doce Pares Eskrima at our academy - so all of our students learn their weaponry skills (doble olisi, solo olisi, baraw, espada y daga, etc) as well as their empty hand skills (punching, kicking, elbows, knees, headbutts, eye gouges, etc.) as well as their grappling (throws and takedowns, joint submissions, chokes and locks, sweeps, positional hold downs and reversals, etc.)
My background contains a good deal of grappling and when I started to learn Doce Pares, the concepts easily flowed to the grappling range - we focus conceptually on sabayan - simultaneous attack and defense, continuous forward pressure, proper body angulation and footwork, proper hip torque within technique, etc.
I always get a chuckle when our fighters arm is raised in victory and the announcer says that so and so of Doce Pares Eskrima is the winner and everyone in the crowd says, what the hell is doce pares eskrima??? It must be from Brazil, right? :-)
Have a great day and thanks for providing such a great forum for FMA conversations!

Takahashi learned escrima from his grandfather, the late Braulio Pedoy.
"It's a diverse art, where you not only utilize the stick, as people think with escrima," Takahashi said. "People don't realize that it has open-hand (no weapon) techniques. In our style, the stick is an extension of the hand.

I'm glad to read the feedback of both sides concerning this video. All the participants in this video (excluding myself) are all enlisted military personnel stationed at Ft Bragg and the 82nd Airborne. All the soldiers in the video (except 2 others, a rigger and a MP) are Special Forces guys that have been deployed to the "sandbox" (Iraq & Afghanistan) and have been there more than once. These guys are trained warriors, and to them this type of training is alot of fun and challenging. I take personal delight that these guys were even willing to go all-out the way we did. Many civilians would wince away from this type of training and they don't last too long as students. The training in our group is approached in a hardcore combative and dynamic approach with an equal consideration for SAFETY to avoid unnecessary injury in order to continue training. What I like even more about our approach in the way we train is that we MAKE NO EXCUSES for our desires and aim to become better fighters.

The martial art in this video is Filipino 'street-fighting,' an almost-forgotten form of self-defense in the Philippines.
Dallas Jessup and Catherine Wehage, both freshmen at St. Mary's Academy in Portland, Oregon came up with what is now known as 'Just Yell Fire,' a DVD film distributed aimed at teaching young girls to defend themselves against possible attackers.
The video teaches viewers weak points on an attacker's body and how to effectively cause enough pain to those points to escape. It also tells viewers ways to avoid becoming a target for rape and kidnapping.
Jessup and Wehage both have backgrounds in Filipino street-fighting from the previous martial arts classes they have taken, and armed with that knowledge, the two young students ventured into producing this self-defense video.
The two teens trained under Chad Von Dette, who has been teaching Filipino martial arts since 2001.

Students in the Rutgers University Filipino Martial Arts Club were recently taught Eskrima, a Filipino martial arts fighting style, by Grandmaster Dionisio "Diony" Canete.
The University is one of few that have Filipino martial arts as a registered sports clubDerobio Style - Manolo Explains (http://www.khon2.com/news/local/10185541.html)
"One of the Lost Arts", as referred to by Great Grandmaster Braulio Pedoy, Derobio Escrima is an ancient bladed Escrima style that went underground in response to the Spanish occupation of the Philippines. A no-nonsense bladed art form, Derobio is structured with a bolo (machete) in one's power hand and the other empty. Today, Derobio Escrima has incorporated various styles of fighting within its system, keeping its foundation on its original bladed movements.
Derobio Escrima emphasizes disarming techniques and defensive behaviors rather than aggressive actions. The basis of Derobio is deflecting and controlling. The meeting of force with force is only used if unavoidable and is immediately translated into a more "passive" or fluid movement.

Anything's a weapon in Filipino Martial Arts
Filipino Martial Arts, more popularly known as "Arnis" or "Eskrima," is based on one thing and one thing alone: survival.
The weapon-heavy style is one of many self-defense techniques offered at Hayward Martial Arts in downtown Hayward.
For the most part in FMA, there are no rules or codes of conduct such as the Japanese "Way of the Warrior." FMA is straight to the point.

These FilAms learn arnis or the kulintang, or have their bodies decorated with traditional Filipino tattoos. They even study the alibata, the pre-Hispanic Tagalog writing system.

And the brothers who trained together recently entered a prestigious hall of fame together.[...]
Gene Tibon, 54, was inducted for his work in Japanese Okinawan Karate; Darren, 47, was honored for his contributions in Filipino Martial Arts.
"We went into separate disciplines along the way, but we were taught to honor and appreciate martial arts by our father," Gene Tibon said, of 73-year-old Eugene Tibon Sr.. "My father is a serious man, and he taught us to take martial arts seriously. And this really is the family business."
[...]
Although Darren Tibon started out studying karate with his brother, he eventually developed an interest in Filipino Martial Arts, which includes extensive weapons training.
"My father always wanted one of us to carry on the traditions of our Filipino heritage, and I found myself drawn to the discipline," he said.
Darren Tibon became a follower of Grandmaster Angel Cabales, the first person to open an Escrima school in Stockton.
Cabales passed away several years ago, and Darren Tibon has become a leader in the sport, operating Angel's Disciples Escrima Academy in Stockton and is the president of the United States Filipino Martial Arts Federation.

MMA: Lorain fighter turns training into success (http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2010/02/26/mma-lorain-fighter-turns-training-into-success/)
Lorain fighter Harley Leimbach hasn’t been training in serrada eskrido for a long time, but the discipline he chose has prepared him for the challenging world of mixed martial arts.
“It’s a mixture of everything,” Leimbach said. “It’s a Filipino martial art. My trainer (Emmanuel de Leon, founder of the Amherst-based Serrada Eskrido Academy) is from the Philippines, and he brought it here. It’s kali, jiu jitsu, muay thai and karate … everything rolled into one. We study everything.”
Alex Campean, a senior black belt at the academy, said the explanation lies in the discipline’s name.
“In a nutshell, ‘eskrima’ is the Filipino fighting system, and ‘eskrido’ is basically combining that with aikido,” said Campean. “And ‘serrada’ is the close range, like adding jiu jitsu. It’s very comprehensive in that it goes through all the ranges — grappling, punching — and even longer ranges like kicking and weapons.”
Leimbach, who has trained at the academy since 2003, earned his black belt in the art and turned his training into success in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) world. He will be the lone local professional fighter at tonight’s Superior Cage Fighting event at Elyria’s Roll Arena.
