Can this be made a section of the forum by itslef

I thought about that...but while there's plenty of martial arts news in general (Judo, Tae Kwon Do, etc.), I'm not sure there's enough FMA-specific news to merit it. What do others think?

If you make it a section people will find FMA related news. There's always plenty happening in various Fil comminities throughout the planet that other people don't know about, festivals, shows, tours, museum shows, ect.

Hard to argue with this! On MartialTalk we certainly folded fora back in to other fora when there wasn't enough action in them.

In fact, thanks to her daughter's insistence, they took up a sport together -- and that sport, of all things, was Thai kick boxing. She takes regular classes at Burleigh Beach and can be seen wielding eskrima or Filipino fighting sticks as she works her way towards achieving a brown belt.

In 2005, she even worked as the personal physician to Australian super middleweight boxing champion Juarne Dowling: "We basically prepared him for a fight with Anthony Mundine and he lasted four rounds, which was incredible. And while he trained at Palm Beach Community Hall he continued to work as a carpenter. He wasn't able to train full-time."

The National School of Combat Art teaches women to fight back, using karate, kick-boxing and Eskrima, a popular martial arts form from the Philippines

As a child, Sanya Modak was shy, meek and submissive never daring to look into your eyes as she spoke. Today, the 20-year-old is a transformed young woman, not only taking in the confidently but also quite ready to respond with a well-aimed kick or a punch if you mess with her.

A resident of a sprawling slum in Bandra, Sanya’s life changed when the National School of Combat Art (NSCA) visited the Anjuman-e-Islam school where she studied, and offered the girls classes in martial arts. For many others in the school too, this was a ticket to a new and improved self, a confidence makeover.

Martial artists stick it to their opponents (http://news.therecord.com/News/Local/article/430719)

At first glance, it looks like chaos, with sticks whirling everywhere, whacking seemingly anywhere.

But soon, a rhythm, even staccato musicality, becomes evident as Stefan Barton, 40, and Gordon Short, 39, practise the Filipino martial art variously known as kali, arnis or eskrima.

Cross train to become a better martial artist (http://www.examiner.com/x-5954-Seattle-Martial-Arts-Examiner~y2009m3d31-When-to-crosstrain-in-Martial-Arts)

In time, however, you'll find that all your previous training and your new training will begin to mix, and you'll be able to freely mix them. When I shifted from Karate to Modern Arnis many years ago, I was a clumsy bufoon with a stick. I whacked myself at least once per class. I found the footwork, the striking patterns, and other elements of Arnis wholly foreign to me.

But after about 6-9 months I overcame these challenges. Eventually I found that I could freely -- without thought -- switch between karate and arnis techniques, footwork, striking, etc. And while my karate training hindered me early on, once I overcame the struggle of style-switching, my karate training put me a little ahead of the curve in Arnis (compared to those who had trained for roughly the same amount of time but hadn't cross-trained).

Interview: Rachel Luttrell talks Stargate Atlantis (http://www.denofgeek.com/television/301941/interview_rachel_luttrell_talks_stargate_atlantis. html)

You started out learning a martial art called Kali...?

Yes, it's Phillipino, and actually kind of a brutal martial art. It involves not just hand to hand but sticks and knives. I think when the stunt co-ordinator James Bamford was initially trying to come up with a fighting style for Teyla that was going to be very unique for what's currently out there, he wanted to come up with something that was going to be very 'in your face'. So he took this stuff from Kali, but then he added different elements to it so that it wasn't immediately pinpointable as one particular martial art.

Do you still maintain that regimen that was required for the show?

No [laughs], I'm sad to say I don't. I'm too tired right now! My regimen is bouncing my little one and that's how I'm staying in shape. But I do plan on continuing to do it, I certainly love it. My husband is a stunt-performer so he comes from a martial arts background as well.

The rare form of martial arts, based on principles of self defence, has become a way of life for Glen, who last month opened an Eskrima academy in Deer Park.

The accomplished instructor started the academy in the West in light of the number of armed robberies in the area and following a two-week intensive training course in the Philippines with the Eskrima World Grand Master.

RP martial art arnis gains foothold in Russia (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/174325/rp-martial-art-arnis-gains-foothold-in-russia)

Arnis (eskrima), the indigenous Filipino martial art, has gained a foothold in Russia, as many enthusiasts attended a recent public demonstration there.

Russians were impressed with the flowing demonstration of thrusts, slashes, kicks, leg and arm sweeps performed by PTK-RF Vice President Ruslan Mashinistov and Grigoriy Shein.

“It’s exciting that Philippine martial arts is being promoted in Russia," Larisa Boldyreva, head of the GlavUpDK Cultural Center Protocol Department, according to an article on the Department of Foreign Affairs website (www.dfa.gov.ph).

Philippine Ambassador to Russia Victor Garcia III reported to the DFA the Filipino martial art is popularly known there as "kali."

He said the public demonstration involved leading members of the Pikiti-Tirsia Kali Russian Federation (PTK-RF)
