Just wondering how practical it would be for a 37 year old with no martial arts background to begin MMA training. Not necessarily looking to compete but want to learn and get in shape. Any suggestions or comments appreciated. Thanks.

I'm 41, and I train at least once a week (saturday mornings with my instructor for a couple of hours, and then an hour or two on my own during the week). I'm in average shape for my age, and a little overweight.
Like any other physical activity, if you've got health problems or are seriously out of shape/overweight, you will want to take it slow and talk to your doctor first. Otherwise, I can't see it being a problem for you. It's like starting an exercise program, basically, or jogging.
Out of curiosity, why MMA, versus some specific art/style/system?

You can certainly learn it! Competing may be difficult, but there are lots of places where you can study it and really improve yourself.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. Scuba, I want to train in MMA because it offers training in a variety of fighting disciplines. I guess you could consider it martial arts "cross-training".
I will definitely check out the link. Thanks again guys.

If you're going to check out Mr. Hartman's school for MMA, I'd also suggest that you check out his Arnis program. You may be surprised that it may be what you're looking for as well. Filipino arts offer instruction in variety of fighting ranges as well.

Brock,
I have to admit that I've never heard of Modern Arnis before, but I will definitely check it out. I am planning on visting Horizon soon. Thanks again for the replies everyone.

I can certainly recommend my instructor and friend Tim Hartman. I believe the MMA class is still run by Mr. Luciano, for whom I also have much respect!

No Problem sir. I'm on a bit of a mission to get everyone addicted to FMA like I am.
