I had the honour of meeting Tatang Illustrisimo in 1994 in Muntinlupa at the WEKAF tournament. He was quite old and frail then but still had a sparkle in his eye and of course, much respected by all present. I beleive he came from Bantayan Island which is next to where my wife comes from (DaanBantayan, Cebu).
I wonder if any KI people could tell me about the name. I was led to believe the original name was Kalis Illustrisimo, meaning the Illustrisimo way of using the Kalis, or sword/blade. I have searched for Kali in several languages and dialects (my wife speaks a couple herself) and have found nothing. I did read that Mr Inosanto and I think Mr Gaje coined the term and it has taken off from there, which sounds plausible. I know when I travelled all over the islands (I was a travel editor with EZ Maps for a while) and over the past 20 or so years I have never come across the word Kali in the name of a style unless it has a connection to a US based group.
As part of my ongoing personal research into FMA and this term for one thing I would appreciate any clarification or opinion from KI people or anyone. Salamat, Perry

Mang Tony and the Manila-Group call it "Kalis Ilustrisimo". I think the term Kali is used by the Bakbakan-Group - Mang Topher, Rey Galang, ... = the American/American influenced Groups.

Not much I guess.. there's only a few who actually had any KI training and most of them prefer to stay more private.. unlike modern arnis or doce pares with thousands of players...

Yes, it's a well-known and well-respected system but with relatively few practitioners who teach the art (as opposed to having melded it with something else).

Iirc, Tony Diego is in the Tondo area.
Go to Luneta (Rizal Park), there you can find the kalis and bahad groups training every sunday morning as well as the other elders and instructors who might be able to help you. You can also get directions how to go to the bakbakan headquarter.
Luneta is the traditional meeting place of the Ilustrisimos. visit the place.

Double Thank You for your interest in my styles of the Arnis!
The Filipino Underground Consolidated Kali is a good one for everyone because the
1. 'Filipino' is because I am Pilipino and am drived by the same methodologies as in the time of Richard the Lion Hearted to the Inquisition Period to the Civil War in the US and the Spanish revolution in the Philippines!
2. 'Underground' is for the technoogy of the indigineous combat blades that shall forge our higher strata of methodology that will provides the delivery systems that shall put your opponent under the ground! Using the technicala of this technology will make his gone!
3. 'Consolidated' is a referral of how the kali will move to the new spectrum of training that will separate the men from the boys. And hence rewarded for becoming a man is the solidifying of your training that will permit the expounding transformation into the warrior!
4. 'Kali' is representatives of the dog of Collie as we are in this system like the pit bulls of ideological warfare and the culture of trainings for discipline!
And I have the solely been the one and only responsible for combining this four elements into the cohesive, comprehensive hole of Filipino Underground Consolidated Kali!!!
Salamat

hello mr JohnJ, to further elaborating on my previous entry my I have ask all of our group to make a definition of the style and presenting to you the collective ideological presentation of our styles as written by our number 1 fighter in the group who is always ready to make a challnge beside Staple Center!
THIS IS DEFINITION TO MY GROUPS NAME.
AND BELOW IS THE DEFINITION OF THE DICTIONARY.
WE MAKE A TRAINING IN THE UNDERGROUND METHODS TO MAKE PURE AND MAKE A SECRET STYLE.
WE ARE ALL A FILIPINO GROUP. WE HAVE CONSOLIDATED THE MOST DANGEROS AND LETAL TECHNIQUE OF THE FMA, FROM ALL THE GREAT GRAND MASTERS OF ALL AROUND PHILIPPINES.
WE MAKE THE PRACTICE IN MY SECRET BASEMENT WITHOUT A LIGHT, TO MAKE A COPY OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE SECRET CAVE TRAINING IN PHILIPPNES
THAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT IN THE U.S. MARTIAL ARTS MAGAZINES.
ON THE WALLS AND THE ROOF, I HAVE PUT A STICKS WITH THE SPRING AND ALSO A BROKEN GLASS AND A WATER ON THE FLOOR TO MAKE AS THE BOODY TRAP,
LIKE THE CAVE OF DETH OF SERRADA STYLE ( i.e., DECUERDAS CAVES IN CEBU )
MY ASSISTANTS THEN USE THE SLINGSHOT AND THE BOW AND ARROW TO MAKE A SURPISE ATTAK TO HIS FEET.
BY DOING LIKE THIS ONE, I MAKE IT A SECRET WAY TO TRAINING MY STUDENTS TO MAKE HIM HARD LIKE A CONCRETE.
SO ACTUALLY, YOU CAN SAY THAT WE ARE THE ORIGINAL STYLE OF THE "ASTIG" .. THAT IS BECAUSE WE ARE MAKE TRAINING IN THE UNDERGROUND METHODS.
ABOUT MY STYLE :
IT IS A VERY DANGEROS STYLE TO MAKE A STICK FIGHT....
AND THE KNIFE FIGHT ... IS A FETAL ! ! !
YOU WILL SEE A BLOOD FOR SURE !
IN OLD DAYS PHILIPPINES, YOU HAVE HEARD OF THE OUTLAW PATAYAN DETH MATCH?
WE HAVE A TYPE OF CHALLENGE ALSO IN MY STYLE , BUT IT IS CALLED THE 'BASAGAN'.
SINCE IT IS ILLEGAL TO MAKE A DETH TO ANOTHER PERSON, WE USE THE 'BASAGAN'!
NO DETHS !... JUST ONLY TO MAKE BROKEN TO YOUR OPPONEMTS.
MY GROUP ARE STRONG AND A HARD LIKE THE CONCRETE ........
AND WE CAN MAKE A STRIKE TO ANYWHERE YOU LIKE, WITHOUT THE TELEGRAPH .....
BUT WE ARE MAKE THE SAFE TRAINING FOR ALL ...
OUR TRAINING IS A SAFE LIKE THE DRIVERSIDE AIRBAG!
BY JUST USING OUR METHODS OF THE FILIPINO UNDERGROUND CONSOLIDATED KALI ..... WE ARE TO MAKE UNSTOPPABLE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY SYSTEM.
IF YOU WISH TO HAVE A SEMINAR, YOU CAN CONTACT TO ME ANYTIME.
YOUR FRIEND.
DATU ABDUL JAKUL ... NOT JAKOL (HE'S MY BROTHER) SALSALANI

consolidate
make (something) physically stronger or more solid : the first phase of the project is to consolidate the outside walls
underground
beneath the surface of the ground : miners working underground.
in or into secrecy or hiding, esp. as a result of carrying out subversive political activities : many were forced to go underground by the government.
Fish? oosh, Who are you to talk to someone you do not know in such a manner? If you're like we can cmake the chit chat about this fish outside of Staples Center in the downtown Los Angeles. You will be very scary of there!

Serious ? nah this guy isn't serious, he has major problems with himself - the poor guy must have a chip on his shoulder, but doesn't have the testicular fortitude to deal with it in a honest way; so comes on a forum with a pseudonym to air his grievances...wow that's an original approach ;)

Is this for real or what? A prank? I mean, being "underground" and "good for every one", while writing about that same undeground stuff in the 'Net... somehow this does not fit together, And yeah, the acronym is yet another indication of someone playing a prank here.
Also, I just cannot figure out whether the description of the "training facility" is supposed to scare someone or to give credibility to the training itself, 'cause neither works...
This guy knows a thing or two, but thats about it. playing dumb to mislead and confuse others but has been in the forums for a long time. if you want a juego to happen, first, dont be hiding behind names you make up. you offer a challenge give the time and place and be there rain or shine.
and please dont mock the names of our brothers from down south PI.

Yes twist you are correct..but there is much more than just that within Bahad ZuBu ..it also has a very heavy Silat element to it as well...very heavy! Bahad ZuBu is simplicity with intent everything else is simply movement..mustaqeen !

True ;) - I didnt want to simplify, just wanted to say that Bahad Zu'Bu incorporates other styles as well.
I remember my training with Mang Yuli and there are definately a lot of elements that are different from Kalis Ilustrisimo.
Hello, I'm new here. but I believe some people call the art Baha Zubu.
It might be of no inconsequence to you but what you just wrote, baha zubu i.e. when spoken and heard will mean as entrapped in flood which is totally the opposite meaning of Bahad Zubu.

Thanks.
Louie
The first hour will be spent in calisthenics, basic strikes, footwork, two-weapon solo coordination drills, core contradas such as recta, retirada and cruzada. A simple dry-run of all of the above. Actually more of a sprint.
The second hour will be spent in paired practice mostly applications of contradas and/or practice of preset linear or cycle drills.
Succeeding training will hardly change the first hour routines but the second hour can change according to the speed and ability of trainees to pick up lessons.

may I just ask about the Kali Illustrisimo practitioners around here aside from luneta as the meeting place. thus anyone knows where tatang Illustrimo came from? I just want to know some facts because my great grandma was Illustrisimo I would like to link up my family blood line. these curiousity grew up because I just heard that the Illustrisimo Kali before it becomes a school was a Family system. I hope some of you can contribute to the history of Kali illustrimo of its origin.
You are claiming to be related to the Ilustrisimos and you don't know anything about the Ilustrisimo clan? lol! If you wanna know the origins of Bakbakan Kali Ilustrisimo, go to bakbakan.com; Kali Ilustrisimo, go to ilustrisimousa.com or kaliacademy.net. Or you can opt to go to amazon.com.. buy and read the books.
