Man robs gas station with pool cue, knife (http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007710020425)

A man armed with a butcher knife and a broken pool cue robbed a Marathon gas station on Indianapolis' Southeastside early today, according to a police report.

The man entered the gas station at 8404 Southeastern Avenue just after midnight carrying half a pool cue and demanded money, the clerk told police. The man then moved behind the counter and emptied the cash register, taking $165, the police report said.

The clerk, who had been sweeping the floor, told police he ran toward the counter and began striking the man with the broom.

The clerk then locked the store's front door and he and the man began fighting with the broom and pool cue, the report said. The clerk told police he grabbed a butcher knife he saw in the man's sweatshirt and hid it behind the counter.

The man then broke through the locked door and got into a vehicle outside, fleeing north on Franklin Road, the clerk told police.

Man attacked with broom, concrete block

A man has been attacked with a broom and a concrete block during a violent home invasion in central Queensland.

Three men knocked on the door of the 40-year-old victim's residence on Harbour Road, Mackay, about 8pm (AEST) on Sunday, police said.

They attempted to assault the man when he opened the door, but police said the victim frightened them off with a large knife.

The men later returned armed with a concrete block and a broom and forced their way into the house.

Police said one man threw the concrete block at the victim, causing a superficial cut and bruising.

Another man attacked him with the broom, causing a serious eye injury that required surgery.

Police said the offenders then left, assaulting a witness on their way out.

They were last seen driving away in a silver hatchback.

The offenders were described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance and in their early 20s.

Stick attacks (and defenses) are more common than some people think!

Indeed they are. The 2003 FBI Uniform Crime Report stated that the most common weapons used in the commission of crimes were guns, knives and some type of club (stick).

They are a ranged weapon that is relatively easy to find/improvise...for the good guys and the bad guys.

I remember a story that Mike "DogZilla" Tibbits from the Dog Brothers told us about that occured between two inmates. One guy was mopping the floor while he was attacked, instead of flipping the broom over he stomped on the mop end and broke it off which created a jagged end. He then used it to defend himself, he thrusted the jagged end towards the face of his attacker and it went through his mouth and out his cheek or something like that pretty close to that. Guro Crafty also mentions the story in their staff DVD.
