Japan's national sport has been plunged into crisis following the death of a teenage wrestler who collapsed during practice a day after he was hit on the head with a beer bottle by his stable master.

The incident has turned the spotlight on harsh acts committed against sumo apprentices in the name of training or punishment.

Japan Wrings Its Hands Over Sumo’s Latest Woes

A coach was expelled from the sumo association this month for inflicting fatal injuries on a 17-year-old apprentice in a hazing incident and may face criminal charges. One of the two grand champions, Asashoryu, has been suspended for claiming an injury and then being filmed playing soccer in his native Mongolia. He is also suspected of fixing matches with other wrestlers, including the other grand champion, also Mongolian.

When things seemingly could not get any worse, a woman tried to climb up into the elevated sumo ring last month during a match, a no-go place for women, who are considered impure in sumo tradition.

Martial artists felled by itchy foot to the head (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/04/14/judo_fungus/)

Japanese academics have warned that the national sports of sumo and judo are under threat of extinction because of the rapid spread of a fungal infection that is making participants' hair fall out.

The All Japan Judo Federation has commissioned research into the spread of Trichophyton tonsurans, The Times reports, amidst fears that it is sapping the strength of the nation's martial artists.

Thou shalt sanitize early and often!

The ringworm fungus isn't the only infection that can be contracted in workout areas. Staph and a few other nasties are out there too. Its a matter of hygiene. Keep your body and your workout clothes respectably clean. Always wash and sanitize your gear. Make sure your training partners/instructors/students know the importance of keeping themselves and their gear clean.
