The material from 52 blocks looks very interesting to me. The way they use their elbows remind me somewhat of the Russian martial arts.

Hi All,
52 Blocks as portrayed in the videos above looks a little sketchy to me, I purchased the video from "Lyte Burly" and was pretty unimpressed, only dealt with one range , no real pressure being applied by his attackers/training partners and looked like it would last about 10seconds against a rounded fighter.
A good MMA guy would blast his way through this guy in no time flat, and in the extras on the dvd when there is footage of Lyte fighting in a point sparring match he doesnt apply anything he teaches in the dvd, he also contridicts himself several times in the dvd re the origions of 52.
I am reserving judgement till I see more but a lot of the DVD was very average and some of it absolute rubbish ie catching and kissing punches.
All the best,
Jim

I also find this 52 Blocks stuff a bit dubious. I'd say less than 1/3 of anything I see from these guys seems useful. Tho, in the enclosed environment of a prison cell or very close quarters, things may evolve differently. It's all a matter of making it work, I suppose.
The jury's still out on 52...

You know, by far much more than technical aspects, I was impressed with their conditioning clips on youtube. Just do search on FarisiDaniel and you'll see some really jaw-droppin' action...

52 is pretty good for street sd. Lyte and some of his folks are students of various martial arts. Wing Chun for instance is something I know them to have studied as well as I believe Ba Gua and possibly even some Kali.
Notice his elbows are very similar to Wing Chun and Kali elbows. There's a fellow who teaches on the LES various arts and Lyte was one of his students. I think Lyte's use of 52 is a little different from traditional 52, if you see the 52 documentary you will see a few different guys who use it much differently than he does but the idea is the same, the head is secured with elbows up often, etc. But some of them even have Forms and they are very reminicent of various arts.
I think what isn't talked about enough is how Martial Arts flicks like Shaw Bro's stuff influenced 52 in the 70s and 80s. That and boxing.
Some guys studied boxing, etc and that gets thrown in too. Kinda looked like JKD to me without the oblique kicks and minus any joint locks or throws. They get into decent positions that lend themselves to these techniques but they stick with elbows and punches.
If the incorporated them they'd be much more effective I think.
