New Posts misnumbering

This is really just a trifle, but often I log on and the board tells me I have 10 new / unread post. When I have it list them there may only be 6. So what is up with the counter? Like I said, it isn't a big deal, more or less just a curiosity question.

Some threads may have multiple new posts. It might also count posts in non-accessible forums, though my understanding is that it only lists what you can see.

When I signed on, it listed 7 posts, 1 thread. When I viewed new, I saw 6 threads. So, it does seem a little odd. When I have a mement I'll ask around about it.

Its a quirk of the software. An old thread with a new post is counted as a new thread on the "new count" list. It's less a "new" as an "active".

It also sometimes seems to count what you can't see. So, you may see 7 new posts, but only be able to read 6 because 1 is in an area you don't have read permissions to. (Staff areas, private sections, supporting member only areas, etc).
