I can attest to this tourney as I fought in it last year.. First time I picked up a stick and fought in competition in some time.. It was a good tourney, well ran and since I am on the board of directors for the Sulong Association, I have a few things I would like to say:
This tourney is to enhance the camarade of the FMA, therefore, there will not be any arrogant attitudes or chest beating at this tourney..
Sulong is a relatively new organization that we formed while I was in chicago with the guys and gals I met and trained with in order to get something going between the west and east coast as far as FMA concern.
The Midwest is a relatively dry zone as far as competition besides the WEKAF style of competition and the Sulong organization is on the forefront of trying to get this started.. We have had several good inquiries concerning the tourney and the organization.
So far, we have as represented in the organization, Dekiti Tirsia under Grandmaster Nene Tortal, Modern arnis with the group in Joliet, Sinko Tiros and Balintawak as represented by GM Rafael Restonand taught by myself as well as the Bahad Zubu system as taught by Punong Guro Mike Blackgrave. We also have several karate systems, jujitsu and judo practitioners and various styles of Silat and Kuntao represented in the group also..
I am giving this organization the full support of the GM Rafael Reston systems because I feel that the Sulong Organization has a good view on what we need to get done in the chicago area with hopes of being on the forefront of establishing a viable organization for the enhancement of the FMA in the midwest..

Hi All,
This organization/event looks to be great networking in the mid-west, with many well-known players. I'm glad to see such comeraderie out that way in the spirit of friendly competition. I myself have never been to a comp.. Is there footage from last year someone could share with us? I'm very interested! Have fun this year, I hope this organization flourishes...
Peace,

Last year at the first sulong tourney, we had 3 rings which had traditional karate, sport karate and the Pacific Island martial arts.. In this ring, we had Lua, Silat,Kuntao and Arnis forms and sparring... It was a well organized tourney with a minimal amount of delay...
Over the past 30 yrs in teaching the FMA and competing overseas in the Philippines, Taiwan and Korea, this is one of the best tourneys that comes to mind as far as organization and efficiency in running..
The organizers had their stuff together and if there were any conflicts, it was taken care of right then and there.
The rules were well explained and there was a blackbelt meeting that explained all the rules and procedures with this tourney..
Again, If you are free around this time of september and in chicago, I wholeheartedly suggest that you get a hold of the organizers of this and preregister for this tourney as from what I saw last year, it is going to be one of the best tourneys in the Midwest.

Hello all, I participated in the Sulong tournament last year and it was a blast! Living in the Midwest doesn't allow us many options for local FMA tournaments, but this is the best around. Not only do you get to view a wide variety of arts in one day, but you can also test your own skills against others who you may never have met before. Even if you're not there to compete, it's a great opportunity to learn and build comradery among everyone in the martial arts community. Sulong is right in asking everyone to respect one another and to check Egos at the door for this tournament. No one martial art is the most superior and we all have something to learn from one another. So, I hope to see you all there in September!

Kamusta ka na....I to look forward to this event. I look forward to meeting and sharing with as many good people as possible. The organizers of this event are working tediously to make it a grand event. I know a lot of the folks who will be present and believe me this will be one superior event. A good time will be had by all, no fuss, no muss, no egos...just good competition and a chance to meet and greet with really solid people. I look forward to seeing you all there.

I'm really excited to get a chance to participate in this tourny this time around (last year I was a little too green in the art). All the participation among various schools and styles is really inspiring. This is a great chance to learn about new styles, seeing them in action, and have a nice friendly competition (which always helps a student learn). I only hope that this can start to bring more tournaments to the midwest and garner new chances in the FMA.
All the best,

Wanted to jump in and say yes, this is going to be a great tournament. I also competed last year for my first try with Smaksticks. Only had them for a month beforehand to try and at the tourney had an absolute blast. The organizers are just that, very organized. They want to provide opportunities for people to meet and have fun, make new friends and try out their skills to see where they're at.
The scoring is much more fun than the typical stop point stuff. You can get a rhythm going and really get a better feel for a fight and how you're doing. Just a helmet and gloves is all you need. The blade oriented scoring keeps you very honest with yourself.
The organizers are working hard on the behalf of the participants and at our suggestions have added thrusts and knife fighting this year as well.
I made so many new friends last year and can't wait to go back to Chicago again to see them.
Still doing some healing from my surgery but this certainly gives me a goal to get there! I'll be attending no matter what.

Sounds good! I find it hard to score knife-fighting in a way that seems realistic and encourages good technique.

The knife competion, as far as I know, is a start/stop point fighting (6 points I think) system. This way, the competion is safer and makes it easier for the judges to call shots. Nevertheless, it should be fun!

Sounds like it'll be a good time!
It really is time for us in the FMA too really get out there, and show the arts. Just recently I was talking to a person whom had no clue that there was such a thing as FMA! Most people who practice other styles of Martial Art have never really seen nor heard of FMA, at least in the affirmative. This Tournament is a conduit to for us to reach out to the larger martial art community and show them in a positive way, what FMA is about. No egos, politics or grandstanding. Just solid Martial art that speaks volumes.

I concur John....far too long has the FMA been placed on back burners by the martial masses. It is now the opportune time to showcase the FMA in a positive light. Unfortunately there are archaic groups of FMA brethren who believe they are the sole proprietors of these art's (nothing could be further from the truth). They for all intense and purposes are more a black spot on the FMA as a whole, and in some ways a laughing stock, especially when outsiders to the FMA see them and there mannerisms (we are all unfortunately & unfairly lumped into the same categories as these buffoons). It will be a good day to show the love, camraderie, and good intentions of good people who have a love for these indigenous / cultural arts from the Pearl of the Orient..The Philippines!

Agreed with whole heartedly Mike,
This is really prevelant in chicago land, I met some instructors who were there and thought they were the best thing to FMA that ever existed. When I first arrived in chicago, I went to the different FMA schools in the area and for the most part all I got was arrogance and ego tripping individuals who had never been to the Philippines and trained.. but that is another story for a later time..
The sulong group welcomed me with open arms as a kyud or brother in the FMA and we had good exchange of training experiences between the systems represented in the schools involved with the sulong group.. That is why I gave them full support of GM Reston's systems that I teach as they were like training with my old group in the Philippines.. It was more of a family oriented group in training and was worthwhile when I trained with them during my short stay in the states..

Hello everyone,
Well Datu Tim Hartman called me on the phone and asked me a question. I answered it truthfully no beating around the bush. This was probably not what he was expecting, and this got me thinking about truth.
Truth is both objective, concrete and provable, and subjective this is preferential e.g. I like chocolate vesus vanilla flavor. In the martial arts we tend too confuse these two truths. The reality being that no system or person has all truth reguarding martial savy. Nobody is always perfect nor omnipotent, We can only do our best. As for the tounament, this event is designed to be a learing experience for all. We can now objectivly test the systems we subjectivly love. Persons can compete with someone whom is not going to do the drill, attack in a filmilar way or pull the shot. people can only possess what they experience! Instructors you should encorage your student to compete and explain too them that this is a learning experience! Student are never a reflection of you or a perfect representation of a system. All have diffresnt abilities and everyone should be encouraged not disuaded to come out and play. Are the rules an absolute perfect representation of bladed combat? No, but no rules are perfect in this reguard. Nevertheless, they are designed to be fair and let the judges who are themslves imperfect and using only two of thir five senses too score, (Sight, Hearing) and concentrating primarily on one (sight) to do thier best. Just my two cents...

Hello All,
I recieved this email from Ron in Indiana and he asked me to post it.
Greetings to everyone participating in the Sulong events. My name is Ron. I am a new member to FMA Talk. I am also on the board of directors to Sulong. I am the Midwest representative of CDF Academies founded by “SIFU” Jack Solderberg & Guro Rich Lamoureaux.
We at Sulong are excited about the upcoming events this September. It was John’s vision to start this organization to unite all martial arts especially the FMA practitioners. It seems to me if you wanted to start an argument all you had to talk about was religion and politics. You could add martial arts to that list! We are hoping to change that. This is part of our mission statement. This is not just another martial arts organization looking for glory. We want to break down the walls that divide us. All of us live for martial arts for many of the same reasons; we just choose different paths of training. We have a lot of common ground. We are wasting and energy our time fighting about the differences.
In my opinion the MMA practitioners are on the right track. They took various combative systems, combined them and trained hard and broke new ground. What most impresses me is they have a lot of respect for each other. Sure there are personality conflicts and some infighting but everyone knows what the other guy had to endure to get there. Even the fans get it unlike lets say… soccer and the obnoxious drunks at majors sporting events.
A long time ago Guro Rich Lamoureaux told me he wished the martial arts community could be more like the AMA (American Medical Association). Why? You would freely share information rather than hide it and keep it for yourself.
Thanks,
Ron

Sometimes it is difficult not being a typist to properly convey a message. Nevertheless, Sulong speaks for itself! Sulong is a Malay word loosely translated into English as “always forward”. So… are you as a martial artist moving forward, or are you stuck in a rut? The opposite may also apply as well, maybe you think a pinnacle has been reached and there is nothing new. Well a rut is nothing more than a grave with the ends kicked out, and if anybody is perfect well maybe this Tournament is not for you. So come network, see what is going on in the broader Martial Arts community and test against others! Experience exactly where you are at and decide where you are going! So please do not miss out! For more information check out www.bushido-Martail-Art.com (http://www.bushido-martail-art.com/) or call Bushido at (815) 922-6319……

Hello All,
I like the term research myself! Nevertheless, in order too do research one must have an enviorment which is controlled and safe. It is only then that some really empirical knowledge can be observed and replicated. This is why the Sulong Championship came into being. Here we can put the hypothetical into action and see the results. One either wins or loses, from there one can deduce the reasons why.
Thanks,
John

Halo John,
Always forward, that sounds great for all of us here in the Midwest. I spoke to a group a Tae Kwon Do gentleman today on the IUPUI campus. They had no idea that FMA had any style of of wrestling, boxing or empty hand. They actually thought that we all just twirled sticks and played with a little bit of knife tactics here and there. After grinding my teeth together and taking a deep breath. I regained my composer and had a passing thought. After I replied to them,"I 'm sorry to hear that". In my passing thought I realized that it's not their fault that they have no idea about FMA. It's our fault! So I refered them to this site as well as a couple of others and told them about your tounament along with some upcoming seminars. I am very excited about you Chicago guys pushing it out there and welcoming everyone, from every art outside of the FMA croud. Time for our stuff to grow intact, not just have little pieces of it floating around in commercialized schools with the students thinking that's all there is.

Yeah, that drives me crazy! You'd think they'd at least know we had some empty hand stuff.
Hello All,
This is from Randy in Chicago:
I admire this group for seeing beyond the art and looking at the bigger picture. Moving forward seems to stand for more than sharing the techniques. It also stands for growing a community of individuals willing to share and partake in something bigger than any one person. I will not be able to attend the tournament, but I wish it the best success and if there's anything I can do to help, feel free to let me know.
Randy N.

Also it has driven me to teh brink of insanity, that other martial artists have little or no concept of what FMA is about. It is are own fault for not reaching out too others and we need too rectify this... Ths Sulong championship will have all kinds of systems represented! So, come out and network and build bridges and get FMA out there!
Thanks,
John

Hey all,
Being a former student of Tae Kwon Do let me say this: they don't really notice other martial arts. Sad, yes, but given the history and cultural heratige that goes along with that art it is easy to understand, even if not that easy to accept. It is very easy to get wrapped up in everything that goes along with one of the "ancient" arts. The best way to resolve the situation in my mind is to just have more multi-system tournaments like this one to allow all martial artists to share their unique skills with others and grow the martial arts as a whole. In the end, does it really matter what you call your art as long as you try to better yourself and others in the process (and have fun doing so)?
PS, I've signed up for the tourny, have you?

I feel that this is an very important event for the Midwest FMA and IMA practitioners.
So to show my personal support of it and the Sulong idea I'm donating some Bolo trainers as prizes.
It is time for the arts we love to get the recognition they deserve, and the only way this will happen is by moving forward.
At the very least attend to network with other artists. For too long our arts have been very divided with many schools not realizing that other schools existed near them.
Division can lead to weakness as teachings go untested against the unknown.
So with no egos and no attitudes lets test them together!
And leave with new friends at the end of the day.

:sword2:Alright, you pencil swinging arnisadors,
Time to put your skills where your mouth is.. This Sulong tourney is the best thing to happen to the midwest since the WEKAF nationals in Milwaukee in 05.. This is something for those arm chair arnisadors to get their sticks out of retirement and see if they still have the skills they had before the arthritis and furniture disease set in..
I fought in the first sulong tourney last year and even though I had to get out of my wheel chair and get help up to the floor to fight my opponent.. I still made it and had a ball..
The group we had last year included some of the Michigan arnisadors, the Illinois Dekiti Tirsia guys, Modern arnis guys and of course, my old carcass from guam..I represented the Reston Balintawak system of the Central Pampanga chapter of the fat old bald guys who thought they still had to show what the old school training was about.... After I fought, I had to get help off the floor and back to my wheel chair so I could collect my oxygen deprived brain back enough to enjoy the get together we had after the tourney..
So if this old bastid from Guam who needed to have help getting out of his wheel chair and up to the floor to play with this group, it was well worth my time and I made some great friends with doing this..
Seriously, all joking aside, this Sulong Tourney and association is worth checking out, even if you don't fight, come and network with some of the most knowledgeable eskrimadors from the chicago land area.. This year, one of the groups that I am affiliated with is bringing a team down from the Northern tip of Michigan just for this tourney after much goading from me.. This group is known as the Maharlika Kuntaw group of which I was a representative of for more than 30 yrs before I hooked up with the North American Maharlika Kuntaw group..
We are going to have some good people there this year, so pack your bags and for those of you that are married, get the kitchen pass from the wife so you can get to the Sulong Championships and help get things rolling as far as the FMA in the midwest region..

At this point we have commitments for around 20 fighters and several more hopefuls. We have at least two teens, one girl and my son. And they are no slouches either, both WEKAF champs.
Around 8 diverse groups including some good knife fighters as well.
Remember, in the Pacific Island ring we will also have a forms competition. If folks are not comfortable with fighting just yet (and I would say this is one of the safest ones out there for beginners), if a ride is available, they should come along and do Sayaws. Good introduction and they can get a feel for the action, whet their appetite.
Bill from Guam came just to support and you could see his leg starting to twitch. Sure enough, borrowed my gear, up he goes and becomes my hero for life. The fire is still there and so is the skill.

Sulong tourney is coming up in 3 weeks, so c'mon you pencil necked geeks. If this old man who needed a wheelchair and help to get on the floor to show these young whippersnappers what old school training is about .
If you think you have the cajones to step up and have some skills, bring it on.. This is a good tourney with the ability to network with other FMA practitioners in the midwest.. I met a lot of good people who I finally had something in common with in regards to the Filipino Martial Culture.
When I fought my opponent, he brought it on with the intensity that I haven't seen since I left the Philippines in 1981 when I was fighting full contact with the Clark AB kickboxing team we had. We had some good people and it was with this venue that I had the distinct privilege of meeting Roland Dantes when we had GMA-7 come to clark and televise the annual Fil-Am full contact tourney that was broadcast nation wide in 1980.
This is not bragging, it is just something that I believe in really supporting. In the last 30 yrs that I have been teaching, I haven't been involved with a lot of organizations due to politics and the self inflated egos that have been prevelant in the martial arts practitioners I have met.
In closing, I am a strong supporter of the Sulong tourney and the Sulong Group due to the beliefs that we share in common as a group of martial arts practitioners who haven't let egos or self inflated egos take the place of quality training and instruction.
So, if you have anything to do with the Filipino Martial Culture and want to affiliate or just network with like minded people, get involved with the Sulong tourney where egos and illusions of grandeur are not prevelant.
If you think you have the skills or just want to get more information about the Sulong Organization, contact John via e-mail or go to the link that is posted on preceeding messages and get involved.
Just remember, Sulong means Moving on, so get off your thrones and get involved.
I am supporting this group from Guam so this means how much I think of this organization. In the next year or two, I will be getting a team together so we can make the trip and represent the martial culture of the Philippines as it should be represented from the islands of the south Pacific.

I will be donating some very cool Pinute trainers for this event and the Sulong org is going to have other good stuff there.
It will be cool to compete for useful stuff, like sticks and swords.

BLADE ORIENTED RULES and TECHNIQUES
Finally, after getting a chance to read through the rules today. I wouldn't miss it for the world. It will be a great time to test and play with our blade skills against other comperable systems. With blade techniques, the footwork will really matter for a change. That's the part I am excited to see. No standing squared up with each other trading blows till someone says "Uncle". I am hoping that a few a my Kung Fu practitioner friends from NE Ohio will show as well. For us all to experiece friendly opposition from styles outside of the FMA's and IMA's. After all, the Fathers of our systems fought of the Dutch, Spanish, English, Chinese, Japanese and each other constantly... The networking potential for all of us(FMAers) in this open tournament is enormous.

Alright you land lubbers on the mainland.. Heads up, I wanted to prepare you in advance.. I am starting to work with some of the Kajukenbo guys here on island and some of my former students on both knife and stick, so be warned.. The Sulong tourney this year is the last year that the statesiders will see the midwest flavor of FMA.
Next year, I am going to try and bring a group from the island I now call home.. We are going to bring it old school as one of the guys who I am going to be training is fresh off of the International Tournament (former Ed Parker Internationals in Pasadena) where he won the self defense category.. He was told by kenpo practitioners in the states that he needed to tone it down due to the way he was hitting, this gentleman (term used lightly) said this is how we do it in the south pacific islands and that is how my people train..
I worked with this group when they were all white belts and didn't even know how to tie their obi.
So next year (hopefully) I will be bringing home the sulong trophies in all categories (forms, stick and knife sparring).
So a word to the wise, get in the practice that you can this year by going to the Sulong Tourney as next year, The place will be mine:EvilGrin:

ANTIQUE SANDATA @ SULONG?
I have heard a couple rumors of some of the tournament participants showing their antique blades. It will be great to be able to hold them in our hands and feel the diffences between the antiques blades comperd to the modern versions.
I will bring about a dozen of my own for paople to see and feel the differences. An additional learning experiences for all of us to share with each other. I know of some SERIOUS Sandata and Senjata collectors / historians in KC, Va. Beach and NJ. Do we have any Sandata addicts here in the Midwest? The Sulong will be a great place to show others your blades and see other collections.
I hope we see so many blades that the table set aside for the Antique Sandata is not large enough to hold them all.
I will even bring my antique Tortal Talibong from the pre-Spanish American War era for the serious practitioners to see and feel. Folded steel with a tempered and chiseled edge.
See you all there, Mike

ANTIQUE SANDATA @ SULONG
It was mislabaled at an auction as an Indonesian Golok and was made by the same family of blade makers that forges the Ginunting and Talibong for Grandmaster "Nene" Tortal in Talisay. I had this verifyed by GM himself. I accidentally stumbled into a piece of history. I hope that I did not mislead anyone by to making them think that it was given to me one of the elder members of the familyTortal or Dekiti style of blade). I have had dozens of antiques from Negros Occidental in my hands in the past. This one is exact, from blade, to "S" guard, to hilt. I will be displaying it at the Sulong for everyone(experienced with a blade) to do a little flow with.
I will also bring to Sulong, some of my other antiques from Negros, Leyte, Sulu and Basilan along with others.
Hope to see everyone there, Mike

I am glad that I was able to light the fire under some of the guys who I have been acquainted with over the years and get them together instead of being fragmented as the filipino tribes team to be.
We have a good group of guys who are coming out for this tourney and I am most definitely going to watch the postings that come out after the tourney.. If it is going to be videoed, don't forget this old fat guy who helped light the fire on this sulong group.

Now we are talking!!!!!!!! It takes a couple of fat old bald men to get things rolling with this organization.. I am glad to see that we are starting to get some of the closet kalistas and eskrimadors out of the woodwork.. This is the whole purpose of Sulong, bringing people together for a common goal,, I just wish I could be there to see this year's competition and maybe even blast sticks with Steve V and see if this old man can keep up with the youngsters..
C'mon down to New Lenox and meet the group that I am glad to call friends which in the FMA is few and far between the internet keyboard kommando challenges and the attitudes of some of the people who don't want to get on the floor and show what they know, but when it comes to something that they don't want to take part of, they sit back and become the guros of keyboard Kali and eskrima by broadcasting negativity on something they don't have the balls to stand up and show in public..
At last count, we had approximately 20 people to show their wares, so if there are more in hiding in the closets, twist the door knob and come into the light of what Sulong is brightly displaying..

It's time to drop your socks and grab your sticks for the trip to the windy city and see if you can start up a few tornadoes with the speed and intensity of all these fighters who are saying that their stuff is better than the fight I did last year..
The proof is in the pudding, talk is cheap and as the old adage goes, talk Shi*, get bit, time to rock and roll and make the east and west coast FMA practitioners envious of the way that we in the midwest can sling a stick and drop a few people who forget to wear their cups.
There is only 3 days left to preregister for this annual event, and if the proof is in your pudding, make the trip and forget the Lawrence Welk baton training that you do for the most part, time to make your system stand out and mean what it is meant to be..

Eye Candy (Antique SANDATA ) @ SULONG!
Pic 1 of 3
Hello to all of my fellow Sandata adicts and FMA practitioners. Here is one of the photos of the eye candy the I will be displaying at SULONG for everyone attending, compeditiors and observers alike to learn from and enjoy.
I truley feel that the "PANDAY" (blade maker) is one of the most important counterperts of both the true FMA's and the Philippine culture its self. The "PANDAY" is responsable for not only for producing bladexs for work, war and survival. But artisticly expressing the cultural diversity of the Philippines. Giving people a chance to see the major differences in just a small fractional representation of Sandata for everyone attending SULONG to see. Feel a blade and understand how some systems are built aroung their blades and some blades are forged for their systems by necessity. There will be plenty of tables available if you would like to show your collection at SULONG. I hope to see this portion of the SULONG Event grow as well. So that we can attracksome of the true Sandata experts very soon. Again, another learning experience for all of us to enjoy.

Hell,
why wait on the video to be put up on the web.. Bring your carcass down and see it first hand.. It is a good way to network and get in some good times as far as watching the tourney.. Trust me it will be a helluva lot better than watching the Human weapon on the History channel.. It will be without the bitching and crying about the environment dealing with the bugs and humidity as in the Philippines.. It will be a well controlled event where the attitude adjustment will be a good swift kick in the ass and a friendly tap on the noggin with John's negotiating stick. Trust me, this is an event you will not want to miss as we are bringing out some of the old timers of the FMA out of the closet and make it happen with the dust that has settled on our rickety old bones.. Help will be there for people who come with their electric scooters and can muster up the energy to get up with the group and slam and jam with the youngsters .

Hopefully John will catch this but if he doesn't (as he said he wouldn't be posting until after the tourney), all you really need is a WEKAF style helmet and hockey type gloves. Personally, IMO you could go with lighter gloves. And forearm protectors if you wish.

I'll also bring my own smak-stiks, they're a little banged up after a year of use, but still usable. Do you know if there will be any of the smak-stiks for sale at the event? I'd love to pick up a few.

Hello Mr. "D",
John will not have smak-sticks for sale at the SULONG Tournament. But he will have plenty to go around for the competitors to use.
As for the questions that have been flying around about "TOP PRIZE @ SULONG". It will be for the "Best over all Competitor".
"TOP PRIZE @ SULONG" is a Ginunting Espada y Daga set forged by Grandmaster "Nene" Tortal's personal "Panday". Carabao handle and Bahi sheath. Made in Negros, not Manila Metro.
Good Luck to all competing!

It was funny winning my own work. ;-)
Buzz won Grandmaster at the event and received a beautiful Talibong Espada y Daga set.
Look for more complete rundown of the event in a day or so.
But lets just say this...
Those who hesitated to attend missed a very good event.
There was an attitude of Fellowship and Kinship among the competitors, and it was very cool to see the similarities and differences in the various FMA styles.
All and all the 3rd Sulong Championship was well worth going to and the prizes were very nice.
Training swords were given for 1st. Kamagong sticks for 2nd and 3rd.
Grandmaster received a live Espada y Daga set.
Where else can you go and win TOYS! ;)

Well,
From what I am reading, the tourney turned out to be all that I expected it to be.. It's about time some of the closet fmaers came out of the closet and showed their respective styles.. I am glad that I am part of this organization and I can promise you come hell or high water, i will be there with a team next year or at least drag my old carcass back to check up on this event as I have been more active with this adventure in promoting the fma in the midwest in more than 30 yrs of being involved and primarily been in the shadows.. I took the trip to chicago to see what the state of the fma was in the midwest and after a initial few rough spots and derogratory comments made about what I taught, I'm glad to see that the DTS, Kuntaw, Penchak Silat, Jornales system and the rest of the people who participated in this event were able to put differences to the side and show what real comradeship was about..
I am so sorry that I missed it this year, but due to mission requirements, I couldn;t get time off to make the trip this year..
But there is always next year

Hey all,
Just wanted to say, Guru Buzz, I took your training of fast hands seriously. I've been practicing every day since the tourny, and now I also can break beer bottles in the same way. Thanks for the know how to get me there!
Matt.
P.S., John wanted everyone to post their places: 3rd in forms (novice) and 4th in knife fighting. (stick fighting = did not place, next year though!)

It is hard to do here in Michigan where every bottle is worth 10 cents return. Gets expensive. But, in Illinois knock yer self out and do your part to keep beer bottles off the shoulder of the road. He he

I didn't place in any event, due to my not being there this year, DAMN IT. Be there next year, baring any typhoons, earthquakes, or travel restrictions by being held back due to immigrations requirements.. Last time I left the islands, Guam had a no visa requirement agreement with the states.

Carol,
You should come next year if at all possible.
It was a good event, and stands to be even better next year.
As this thing grows it will become the jewel of FMA in the Midwest.
And it's already pretty good...
And who knows maybe next year we'll have more rings and more FMA demos.
Exposing even more of the breadth of styles that are out there to be experienced.

I rarely post to forums, but I just had to chime in on this one.
The Sulong was the most fun I have had at a tournament in recent memory. My students loved it and, as for most of them this was their first one, it was a great introduction for them.
My hat is off to John and Norm for putting this together, and I think Bill is correct, it will become the jewel of FMA/IMA tournaments for the Midwest.
My students are already planning for next year and their enthusiasm has carried over to those who couldn't make it this year.
It was wonderful to have a place where we, as a Silat school, could come and compete here in the States.
I'm already looking forward to the next one.

I have spent a little time prowling around on this forum and it seems to be a pretty nice place. I have mostly stayed away from forums because I am tired of politics, but so far I have found little of that here.
Hopefully from time to time I will be able to say something intelligible about Silat Zulfikari and Navadisha Asika if there is interest, though I fear it might be dull for most people here.

Mariah- I'd love to do a demo set with you anytime. As far as fighting the men, I believe that if you hold rank there should be no distinction between male or female- you are the rank you hold. You should have the ability to defend that rank or you shouldn't be wearing the belt. You did an excellant job of keeping wild Bill at bay., he can be a Bull at times. If anybody would like to sponsor a FMA/ IMA event here in Michigan- I would definitely be interested and can help with setting it up.

We really try to stay away from politics and encourage discussion that focuses more on our members styles and interests. :)
There are a few people here, including myself, that have some exposure to Filipino and Indonesian Silat. We don't have a large number of Silat practitioners here, but we do have members that are interested in hearing about other styles...whether they practice them or not.
I've read a bit of your blog...you are a very thoughtful writer...I hope you also feel free to welcome to bring up any non-FMA topics worthy of discourse in areas like The Den. While we're not an extremely large community, I think you'll find a rather intelligent audience that appreciates an informed opinion.
Please let me or any of the other Admins know if you need a hand with anything...and again welcome sir. :asian:

Buzz rocked the house with that Kuntaw staff form.
He actually went all Yoda on us. Buzz has been a bit under the weather this last year or so, so he comes out all leaning on his staff, introduces himself, then goes into one big blur of motion, with double butterfly kicks and his staff going every which way at once, changing levels, switching directions and then stopping on a dime. Then, hobbles off.
Mariah was sitting next to me, she leaned over and said "I never imagined a person his age could move like that!" (She is only thirteen :coolyello )
Buzz's staff work, both form and fighting, is some of the best I have seen.

I have talked with a great many involved, and everyone had a great time. No egos or trash talk, just good old fasioned fun. Nevertheless, for those reading this for the first time, the real winner of this event was St. Jude's Childrens Hospital! The tournament sponsred St. Jude's, so everyone who came, thanks. Also, we have a tentative date of October 12th for next years Sulong Championship, so everybody mark your calenders. Finally, later in the week I will post the results of the Knife, novice forms portion of the competition...

Hi Bill,
Great observation..... Never thought about it till your post but it is true. Although, after watching the application of techniques by each individual competing. I have to tip my hat to You, Errnie and Matt, for the way the three of you treated each match as the realthing. Easpecially with your guys footwork, deceptions and angles of attact. In a real confrontation you three would have cleaned house with quick kills. I was also impressed with how you and Matt knocked your opponents backward with your thrusting and Ernie's anglular footwok to slash and thrust as he let his opponnents fly by. Not giving them a chance to counter or recounter. No superficial wounds inflicted from any one of you three. Also showing me that John Bednarski is an outstanding instructor as well.

While it is nice to think I had something to do with the wins, I really have to consider it a group effort. All my students have benefited from training with Buzz at the gatherings. Steve, though he calls himself my student, is a world class competitor and teacher in his own right, and he had a lot to do with getting everyone ready as well. And let's not forget that while you were down here polishing your game you were helping to get my guys (and girls) ready for the event as well. It really was a group effort, It takes a tribe to train a warrior. (This may just be the new tag line for the gatherings) I thought everyone fought well. There were no pushover victories and every fight could have gone either way, not to mention that the sportsmanship and comradrarie were excellent. It was one of those rare tournaments where everyone carried themselves as gentlemen (or ladies) and there was never a harsh word to a judge or referee. Ya just can't beat that.

True enough Mike,
I wasn't out to deny the skill of any instructor or student, I just found it interesting the way it played out. And it gives us something to talk about.:)
Thanks for the compliments!
I think the addition of the thrust being legal made it easier for some and harder for others.
I just tried to fight my fight and treated the event as a litmus test to where I am at personally.
Next year is going to be a blast... I can't wait.

Hope to see ya before next year, Mike
Hello everybody,
Well the Sulong Championship is on for next year! The 4th annual Sulong Championship will be held Sunday October 12th, over the holiday weekend so everybody should have that Monday off in order to recover. Also Bill, you took first place in Stickfighting and your primary art is American Maharlika Kuntaw! Nervertheless, most everyone in the Midwest whom trains FMA/IMA has at least heard of Mushtaq Ali Al-Ansari whom is really a fantastic person and Martial artist. The Martial art part just being icing on the cake! Finally, all the DTS people placed in forms and knife, so I guess we have to work harder on the stick stuff for next year!
Thanks,
John

I second the statement that Mushtaq is a world class martial artist who is willing to share his knowledge of various arts that he has trained in.. A couple of months before I relocated to Guam, I spent the weekend with Mushtaq and Steve Van H where we went over the silat system that I wanted to learn from Mushtaq.. He took time out of his weekend and spent the day with me working on the silat system and the knife aspects as well as the empty hand aspects of it. Mushtaq even took the time to work with me in another knife system that he teaches and I was interested in learning..
And to top things off, I had the chance to take a few minutes to spar with Steve Van H and that was a riot..
Mushtaq, Steve, John ,Buzz and Mike are all world class martial artists and I am glad to be able to call them friends and in the IMA/FMA commmunity
Friends are few and far between and it has been my privilege to call them friends as they took the time and opened up their schools for me to train and show what I have been taught over the years.

What sort of awards are you giving to champions at these tournament?
Plaque, medals, certificate, trophies, etc.... I asked the question, because it seems that some of the tournament that I have seen gives out poor or cheap awards. Does the award matters at all? My opinion, it should, since most of these tournaments, fees and expectator's entrance fees are not cheap. From previous tournament what did they give out. Was the award given matches the expectation of being a champion?

Hallo Excalibur!
That's a legit question that I am more than happy to answer...... Last year the "Top Dog Award" was given to Guro "Buz", an authentic Carabao horn hilt, Bahi sheathed Ginunting, with a hand forged, high carbon steel blade from just outside of Talisay, Negros Occidental. Not mass produced junk from Manila. Compliments of Grand Tuhon "Nene" Tortal.
Other winners of multiple events like Our great friend Guro Bill Bednarick, was awarded an authentic Talibong of the same quatlity, not to mention the fact that Brother Bill donated literally hundreds of dollars worth of thick, heavyyyyyyyyyy, realistic practice blades with perfectly detailed wooden handles. Bill has even made practice Ginuntings.
Other multiple event winners received those same "kick ass" practice blades, you can view the quality of these prizes at:
www.combativecustoms.com (http://www.combativecustoms.com)
Single event winners received really nice Bahi and Kamagong Bastons, you know those are not cheap either.
The young'ens recieved some really nice sized bronze medals, they did not seem disappointed about their awards one bit either. Brother John just could not give them weapons. All though I personally feel every good kid should have their own Taugus or Yakan Barong, but that's just me Hoosier country boy opinion. Guess because I got my first Bolo when I was 10.
Honestly, the Sulong Championship was not ever intended to be and is not a profitable event for those involved in working and promoting it. It is thanks to Brother John Bednarski's love of the S.E. Asian fighting systems. John and a hand full of friends do all this work to bring the MA community together as a whole. To give others the chance to see what the tradional systems are all about and give all the differnt styles of Silat, Kali, Armis, Eskrima, Kuntao and Kuntaw the people in their organizations a chance to meet, compare and learn from each other. All efforts and finances are used to make sure everyone has a great time and has something nice to take home with them. Even if they did not have the chance to win an award, they are guaranteed to have a great time with great people and learn about other great styles and see how they perform. So literally, " No One Goes Home With Nothing To Show For It ". At minimum everyone goes home with a smile, a good word to say, a new hand full of techniques, and urge to work for the "Top Dog" award the next year and new friends. So even though there are great awards, it's not the only thing you will get.
Sulong! Mike
Hello All,
The awards given out can be seen on previous posts, but I will elaborate. The awards given out were, kamagong, Bahi sticks, and training swords. Overall champions were given swords made by GM Tortals personal baldesmith. The handles were made from horn and the sheathes Bahi. Does this meet with expectations???? Also our tournament fees are reasonable, and we support St Judes Childrens research hospital! Last year we won a silver medal from St. Judes this year I intend to go for the Gold! So I hope this answers your questions? Also this year the tournament will be held on Sunday October 12th keep checking www.Bushido-Martial-arts.com (http://www.Bushido-Martial-arts.com) for details and I will be in the near future posting more stuff.... Also please read the entire thread.
Thanks,
John

Thank you for sharing these info. These awards that you mention are brilliant ideas. (brilliant!!!!!) I just hope that some tournament would catch on on some of these ideas on being creative and unique and more commemorative in giving awards on tournaments. It makes the tournament more meaningful to those who enter and participate on these events.
Hello All,
Thanks Excaliber, positve comments are always a plus....

Hello everyone!
I ran across this photo that truley represtents another one the brutal Dekiti-Tirsia Siradas linear Dumog / Panggamut techniques that Grand Tuhon "Nene" Tortal will be demonstrating at the Sulong Championship. The photo was taken in Negros Occidental in 1993 with the extremely dedicated and long long student / fall guy
Lieutenant Robert Casper.

Ok you sons of bastoneros
The winter season is almost over, so it's time to get your stuff in one sock and knock the winter rust off of your stick swinging appendages. According to my computations, there is about 280 days to get ready for this tourney. Trust me, the sons of bastonerso here on Guam are already starting to get serious.
So knock off the winter blues and start slicing holes in the ozone layer by putting the energy saved up by the winter sleep and get ready for this tourney..
The temperature here at 1:43 pm Thursday 6 March is a freezing 85 degrees and the trade winds from the west are starting to blow in the tropical rain. Just thought I would pass this on.

Best of luck on the event John. Your doing a fantastic job promoting the FMA. Depending on my schedule or should I say the impending schedule of my child being born..I may be able to make this one. Great job bro..keep it up.
New video of Pacific Island ring competitors doing forms from last year's tournament. The Pacific Island ring is open to players of Hawaiian martial arts (i.e Lua), Indonesian martial arts (i.e. pencak silat) and Filipino martial arts (i.e. kali, escrima, arnis).

Hey John,
I like the video and it was good seeing Buzz do his thing. (always fun http://www.fmatalk.com/images/icons/icon6.gif) I do not know everyone else on the video but I would like to see the karate'ish movement go away from Filipino Carenza. Or I would at least hope that they would not be marked up because of flash and dash. If it looks like it came from a point karate devision or musical kata well it probably is not all that filipino.
As to the Sulong well you know I am coming http://www.fmatalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif and hoping to bring a few stick bangers with me. It will be different as we like to go full contact with rattan but hey any training is always fun! http://www.fmatalk.com/images/icons/icon6.gif Plus it will give them a chance to really get after it with some different people!
The Sulong is definately the Midwests premier event so lets all get out and support it! http://www.fmatalk.com/images/icons/icon14.gif Plus hey it is in Chicago! Have to love that! http://www.fmatalk.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

We now have two tournaments on the same weekend. Which one should you attend? I will most likely be attending the Nagasulong Championship. I’m not taking sides in this little squabble. My choice is based on the fact that GT Tortal will not be at the Sulong tournament. I’m not 100% yet. I have some youth competitor whom would like to compete. Before we make the commitment I would like to see what the divisions are going to be like and if the rules have changed. Looking forward to receiving more Intel.

"Oh man"?
After just watching the video, I don't think that this is the proper target market for competitors that have a lack of:footwork, in-fighting, ground fighting and/or weaponry skills. If you practice sticking your limbs out that far in these systems, they will be broken and/or cut off. It is very obvious that the promoter of this tournament holds NO RANK IN ANY S.E. Asian system. But at least you have Buzz on there to promote your lie. In this footage, Buzz is the only one that knows how to move. You will have a beeter chance getting practitioners from the commercialized systems and forums.
By by the way, YOUR PDF on YOUR website is a BIG LIE as well. You are using Brother John's name, my Grand Tuhon's name and my name with out our permission as well as knowing WE WILL NOT BE THERE. THAT IS FRAUD and I WILL make sure that everyone in your MA community will find out quickly that YOU ARE A LIAR and FRAUD if our names do not come off of YOU FALSE PDF immediately.
SULONG fits you well since your lies continue to progress!
Sincerely, Guro Mike Snow

Mr. Snow,
I take offense on your direct angst toward my personal post. Your tone clearly shows you attitude and spirit for other martial artist and their respective organizations.
Let's not beat around the bush and set the record straight. No footage of FMA was shown, so it's not reasonable to compare fighting styles. The FMA portion of the tournament was not used in respect for 'brother John' to not use his likeness in the video. Yes, John was a participant in that tournament which you call a lie.
I'm promoting the Sulong Championship and held rank in an S.E. Asian Martial Art. I have the certificates to prove it. Signed by 'brother John'. I'm not sure if they're valid any longer, but I don't believe I have forgoten my teachings in these last two months.
Your names have been remove from the false PDF's. Thanks for the proofreading.

On 10/2 Nautilus wrote "I'm promoting the Sulong Championship "
Previously in this thread you posted a link to my Youtube video to help promote this tournament on 8/26.
Fine with me. The only people in it were you, me and John.
It was listed as "Chicago Stickfighting 06" No event names were attached. It is what it is. Footage of a contest in Chicago.
Now SULONG (I'll have to guess who that is but we know who is claiming to actually outright OWN this word. Am I in some sort of trouble for typing it here?) has reported a copyright violation with youtube and on the basis of this baseless assertion they have to take it down. (The Sulong Organization did not even exist at that time. We met about it much later to discuss it's founding.)
Why? Were you aware? I had your verbal agreement to post this well over a year ago to help promote last year's tournament.
Are you now recinding this agreement? Why not just let me know?
And I own this footage. Taken with MY camera by Bill Anderson. There were no videotaping waivers required or offered at the time and no notifications that it was not allowed at an event open to the PUBLIC where I paid the organizer of the tournament my hard earned money.
Bob Hubbard

It seems that there is confusion over what/who/how copyright works. As a professional web designer, web host and photographer, I know a bit about them. I'm not a lawyer, so none of this should be taken as legal advice.
Regarding words, you can't copyright them. Says so right on the US Copyright site.
Regarding photos taken at a PUBLIC event, these tend to fall under "Does the photo subject expect privacy?" and "Is it a question of national security?" as well as journalism rules. So you can go there and take pictures and post them in a news sense without worry in most cases. Stating "These are from the XYZ event" doesn't violate law.
Video tends to fall into the same category.
You may attend an event, and take photos and video as you will, IF THE EVENT ALLOWS IT, and post it, and usually be within the law. You can't sneak into the ladies rest room however as there is an expectation of privacy, you can't shoot up a womans skirt, because there is an expectation of privacy, and you can't shoot on the bridge of the latest military attack cruiser because it's a matter of national security. A karate competition? It's neither private nor a security issue, so shoot away. If they tell you to stop, then stop, otherwise they can ask you to leave, and if you dont you're then trespassing. But that's got nothing to do with copyright.
As to who owns the word "Sulong", a Norman Basile applied for a registration to trademark the term "SULONG" on 2008-09-17, in regards to it's use as a registered service mark for "Entertainment services in the nature of live mixed martial arts (MMA) events; Martial arts instruction; Operating of martial arts' schools; Operating of martial arts' studios; Organizing live mixed martial arts events and competitions; Presentation of mixed martial arts (MMA) events" with a first use claim of 2007-09-14. This application is currently pending and has neither been accepted nor rejected as of the last update to the USPTO system 2008-09-29.
In my opinion, if it's passed, it simply restricts someone else from naming a MMA event, school or organization SULONG. It doesn't stop you from calling your car dealership that however, and prior use by other parties would probably factor in, as would it's being a common word.
But discussing the Sulong event, or the "Sulong Negosyo" or the "Sulong CARHRIHL" or or "Wong Sulong" or even the "The Parit Sulong Massacre" violate no copyright or trademark laws.
A better use of everyone's time would be to repair the damage in the martial arts community that the actions of a few and resulting anger backlash are causing. Much of the crap that's been tossed up concerning this and the now former "NagaSulong" event should have been handled offline, and in a more professional manner.
Again, none of the above should be construed as legal advice, nor official FMATalk policy. I'm speaking as myself, from my experience.
The Boss
