This thread (http://www.martialtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49199) on MartialTalk contains some clips on Portuguese stick fighting (Jogo do pau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jogo_do_Pau)).

I have a book on it on my shelves but haven't looked at it in much detail yet.

Interesting! I liked the lower clip a lot better...it was really cool watching the 1-against-2 :D

I've been eyeing that book for awhile now at Borders. Now we just need some more material about Juego de Palo and Garrote Larense as well.

Yes, I'd very much like to see about Garrote Larense, which reminds me of the Portuguese system!

Beyond the systems, which seems like something one might have to travel quite far to experience first-hand to train in-depth, I would like to purchase a lemonwood stick of the type utilized in Garrote Larense. I am way curious about those! I actually attempted to contact someone from that system regarding the purchasing of one, to no avail. Ah well such is life!
They all interest me nonetheless!

Peace,

~John

Presuming that the book you people are talking about is the one written by luis Preto, I would highly recommend it. It is really well written, presentation is exceptionally good and the section on training, I believe, is the must read for anyone in martial arts.
I like the staff curricullum of Jogo de Pau very much, but I am not that happy with the stick portion. In my opinion, it does not stand the level of FMA, or French la canne, if European styles are considered.

Yes, the green-covered book!

I wish I knew more about these styles--I find them fascinating!

I had the luck to train la canne at two best known schools in Paris. I have to tell you I really liked the training methodology of single and duble sticks, but to tell you the truth, I would say that the long staff is better in Portugese interpretation then French.

i got the video of jogo do pau.. interesting. they claim to be unbeaten and the best stickfighting art.. obviously we all disagree.. lol but they do look good. not sure i could wear the uniform!!
there are some interesting clips of garrotte larense on youtube i saw a while ago. a guy from venezuela came to see me a while ago and i have a lemonwood stick from him. the weight is balanced differently to arnis sticks.. - weight to the point, or in this case away from the handle. i am told it it weighted like a cavalry sabre.
