At the Dan Inosanto seminar this past weekend he did a brief Balintawak section. I was surprised because I didn't think that was part of his system. He told the jailed-with-a-Frenchman story (and clearly indicated that it might be apocryphal). Someone suggested his Balintawak training was via Ising Atillo--is that so?

I have no idea. This is interesting. This is the first time I've heard that guro Dan Inosanto studied Balintawak style. Sorry I dont have info about that. Best bet is to ask the balintawak stytlists

I too was unaware that Dan Inosanto is now teaching Balintawak. What did he present during this seminar?

His training comes from Atillo, though I think it is limited.

I think that would be a good guess.

We were doing drills where we entered from medium to close range. Partner was blocking with both hands on the stick and then you trap weapon hand then rear hand. There were probably others that I didn't see because I was working with some people who had never picked up a stick before.

To say that he is teaching Balintawak is too strong. In the midst of a doing a wide variety of single stick techniques he breifly did some Balintawak, identifying it as such and telling the jail story. Then he moved on. But, I didn't know he did any Balintawak at all, so I was surprised! But, this was the first time I had ever been to one of his seminars, and I was generally surprised by his vast knowledge.
Great seminar--when I get a breather from work I'll try to post more about it!
He trained a bit with GM Atillo back in 2002 for a few months of sporadic private lessons. I was there for one of them and my teacher was there for a few as well.
Atillo did a couple of demo lessons at the Inosanto Academy before that.

At the seminar I attended back in March Atillo called Inosanto. It was my understanding at that time he was still training with Atillo privately. Inosanto taught a little Balintawak at the seminar in Pittsburgh in October as well. I was referring to it as "sloppy Balintawak". The techniques were good, but it was just loose as far as the Balintawak I've seen.

I do remember @ seminar back in 95 or 96 Ted Buot visiting a Guro Dan seminar in Michigan. My instructor at the time and seminar host, Dave Hatch was(is) a student of Ted Buot. Not sure if Guro Dan recieved any training then.

I wonder if he's still working on Balintawak or has just absorbed a couple of specific techniques?
