I know there are at least two PTK instructors in San Antonio, are any of their students on this forum? I'm living in Japan right now, but when I return to TX, I'm looking to find a good school to go to. Of course, I have alot of questions. Foremost, when does your teacher start with empty-hand techniques? Do you spar with these using full contact? Do you practice any anti-gun tactics or techniques? I heard that Ricky Rillera is teaching Silat Kuntau Tekpi now. Have any of you experienced or trained this system? I'm sure that I'll have more to ask, but I'll leave it there for now.
Thanks,
Aaron

Guro Martinez,
My main questions are: How long does it typically take for a beginner student to transition into empty-hand techniques (assuming that one begins with weapon training?) Do students at your school spar full contact with empty-hands? Does your curriculum include anti-gun techniques? Thank you for your time and any other information you can include would be much appreciated!

Hello Aaron,
The curriculum I teach is the Doce Methodos foundation. The ranks are broken down by Method 1, 2 and so on. I listed at each rank when you would learn empty hands. I offer an empty hand only class at my school in addition to the Pekiti Tirsia Kali class. We do spar full contact empty hand, stick, and knife. I do incorporate Gun techniques in both classes.
Rank Charts:
Yakan Isa
Yakan Dalawa: BASIC MANO Y DAGA
Yakan Tatlo: BASIC MANO MANO/PANGAMUT
Lakan Isa
Lakan Dalawa: MANO Y DAGA
Lakan Tatlo: MANO Y MANO/PANGAMUT
Lakan Apat
Lakan Lima: MANO Y DAGA
Lakan Anim: MANO Y MANO/PANGAMUT/DUMOG
Lakan Guro: Comprehensive Examination / Testing / Student Teaching:
Mano Mano / Pangamut / Dumog
Thank you,

Aaron,
It has been a while since I have been on FMA Talk, otherwise I would have responded earlier. Thanks for your inquiry. You can check out my website at www.rivercitykali.com (http://www.rivercitykali.com) I also recommend that you check out www.pt-go.com (http://www.pt-go.com), which has a comprehensive breakdown of what is taught at the various levels. During the Foundation Skills Development phase of training (at the beginning) you learn basic solo baston, daga y daga, mano y mano (empty hand), and doble baston. From there, progression is made through the Doce Methodos - the foundation system of PTK. While advancing through the Doce Methodos the student learns solo baston and how the various other weapons categories relate to the Doce Methodos (this includeds empty hand). Sparring occurs at various levels, this includes technical and eventually full sparring. Feel free to stop by my class anytime. Times and location can be found at my website.
Sincerely,

Guro Denson,
Thanks for your reply. I definitely intend to watch as many classes and instructors as I am able to when I get to TX. I understand you trained originally with Ricky Rillera. Have you any experience with the Silat he's teaching now? It looks interesting, but I'm having some trouble finding much on it on the web. In your experience, how quickly do students move up the ranks in PTK?
Thanks for your time,
Aaron

Aaron,
Please just call me Dustin. No need to be formal, but your courtesy is appreciated. Yes, Ricky was my first and original Pekiti instructor. He is a great person. I don't really know much about Silat Tekpi, other than one short, simple seminar given by Omar Hakim, which was a good introduction to it. You could contact Ricky or Omar Hakim directly for more information. I have not done anything with it since then. My training focuses solely on Pekiti.
There is a basic timetable for rank advancement on the PTGO website under the system section. Follow the links to ranking and system outlines. However, as you might guess, progression through the system depends on the amount of effort an individual puts into practice, attention, focus, self-discipline and understanding. This is, of course, is tempered by natural ability, talents, quality of instruction, and fortune. Performance equals actual ability plus fortune. If you just focus on training hard, practicing, and being able to execute what you have learned well, then the rank will come.
Sincerely,
Dustin B. Denson

Dustin,
Thanks again for your information and assistance. I found the info I was looking for--Although, I'm not sure how I missed it in the first place. I'm champing at the bit to get started with training in FMA. I'll just have to try to be patient until I get back to the states.

In PTK we don't have timetable in the learning process . If you trust the knife you don't need the hand techniques. If you prefer the hand techniques then you will understand after the knife is in your hands. In PTK we cut the hand. So if you want your hand to be better learned what is a knife and you will understand your hand.
Those hands will never work in reality. Trust your knife and you will love your hand
