Hello, I'm new to these forums and completely untrained in FMA's. I'm particularly interested in pekiti tirsia - does anyone know of any resources in the DC metropolitan area? northern virginia, maryland and the district? thanks so much

thankyou kindly, arnisador - that was a very good link
alas it confirmed what I thought - there is nothing in my local area (in terms of certified instructors), and thus far I haven't heard back from them regarding a training group - but that may well be due to the long weekend.

Appreciate it :)

Don't overlook the closely related Dekiti Tirsia Siradas system! Perhaps it's available near you?

aye absolutely - I've searched tentatively for dekiti tirsia siradas - but even though its the older (i think) art, it seems less widespread
thanks again! :)

Dok,

I know that this won't really help you any... being all the way down in the district area... but there is a school in Glasgow, DE that teaches PT... along with Muay Thai...

If you're interested in the information... shoot me a PM or email... and I'll dig it up for you...

Heck! Even if you just did a class or two a month... it's at least something!

Yours in the arts,

Andy

P.S. If your looking for FMA training in general... there are a few people down in the MD/DC area that teach Modern Arnis...

Dok,

You asked me on the other board about AMOK. The next time I see my teacher I'll get his feedback on the AMOK tribe in DC. I'll post whatever I can :)

thankyou kindly MSTCND - delaware is most likely a little beyond my reach even for occasional instruction (seminars might be the exception) - but I'll hit you up with a PM in any case :)

Carol - I've touched base with some Amok! people in Virginia via their forums - if your instructor has any information about the tribe in DC that would be great - last I heard its somewhat inactive. Anythin you can find would really be appreciated.

Dok,

Just asking why the preference to PT.There are some small but very active groups of other styles/systems in Md and Va. If interested I can request and have them call you. A PT friend of mine just moved to Fla a month ago and he is coming to DC every now and then. Tell me if this info interests you. BTW,what other arts do you practice?

langgaw - my preference for PT comes from the good things I've heard about that particular art. I've been searching for styles/arts that are intuitive, relatively simple, and effective (and hopefully had -some- open handed applicability as well). PT Kali, as well as Dekiti Tirsia Kali, Serak Silat, all seem to be spoken highly of - and matched what I was looking for.

Now, as I'm interested in learning the blade, Sayoc Kali seems like an obvious choice... but for various reasons I've been leaning away from it.

I'd be happy to shoot you my phone number and take contact with those groups - could you PM me with some more information, like what kind of arts they practice and in what general areas? I'll get back to you asap. thankyou kindly.

As to my background - when I was much younger I practiced Tae Kwon Do (didnt everyone ;P - but I spent a good many years on it with a pretty die-hard group, hopping from school gym to school gym from basement to basement until it was disbanded due to financial difficulties). Then I tried out a style of Kung Fu (I can't honestly remember which, the school has since closed and to be honest I didnt find satisfaction in it) for a couple months. I spent the next two years studying Okinawan Karate - Kyokushinkai, I believe. It was interesting, but ultimately not what I was looking for either, and I then moved from the area. Haven't looked at MA's for years, and recently my interest has been renewed thanks to a schedule that permits it.

Apologies for the life story. Now I'm studying Krav Maga - whether or not its considered an art in the traditional sense, I dont know, but at least that s what I'm currently practicing.

I've heard good things about Krav Maga. Something like that or Jeet Kune Do will give you a good background that should transfer well to a FMA in the future!

arnisador - I'll second those good things ;) - personally I really enjoy Krav Maga. Its a very intense no-nonsense workout and has gotten me back in shape.

Brock - unfortunately that link didnt work for me, could you give me the name of the club/organisation, please? might be able to look it up through other means.

No problem. I actually only just met these guys at the Inosanto seminar in Pittsburgh, but they were very helpful when my brain shut down with information overload.

Dok,

I don't know if you're still checking this thread. But I'm in Alexandria. I train with a group loosely associated with the Philippines Cultural Society at George Washington University. During the semester, we train at the university downtown. During the summer months, though, we train at a park in Springfield, VA.

The group is Modern Arnis rather than pekiti tersia. I'm neither one personally. My background is primarily Doce Pares and Inosanto Kali (though my DP teacher did have some experience with Pekiti Tersia). But if you're interested in getting in touch, feel free to PM me and we can keep in contact about when we're next getting together. That group isn't meeting again yet. So I've been travelling to Baltimore to train with my original DP school. But I'd like to get some training done in the metro area again. I'm looking to begin my own training group in the area too.

Dr. David Wink (Pekiti Tirsia Kali) teaches in the DC area. There was a post in the last issue of the Eskrima Digest that descibes a seminar that he is teaching soon. Worth a look at.

Best,

I have been training with Dave for the past4 months or so.
The guy is phenomenal as are the other senior instructors.
I had my first fight following our seminar last Saturday.
Good stuff.

Anyone in the DC area, feel free to come check us out.
We train in Frederick, MD on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons.

Brad leads a group in Leesburg, VA on Thursday nights.
