Looking for recommedations for my next purchase - an everyday carry blade. Currently I am carrrying a Spyderco Delica (3" blade) which I like a lot.

I'm looking for a folder that won't get me in to hot water with the local constabulary should I get caught with it. I'd rather not carry anything with a name imprinte on it that sounds like somethng Rambo would carry. I'd also prefer to keep the blade around 4", it absolutely must be under 6". I'm not looking for something cheap, I'd rather spend the money and know that I'm getting something of good quality.

Your thoughts?

Fixed or folder? I usually carry a fixed blade strong side and a folder on my complimentary side. The delica is a great knife. If you want something bigger, go for the Waved Spyderco Endura. The ergonomics are much the same as a delica and the wave makes deployment a snap.

Hey Carol,

Thats a nice blade. I also like several CRKT models as well.

Thanks guys!

Understandably, a fixed blade does have better structural integrity, but a folder has a few more advantages for what I'm looking for. The Delica is really nice, I really like how I can carry it with just about anything without it poking me in the hips. :D I don't know if I'll have the same experience with a larger blade, but I'll definitely check out the Endura.

Been offline for a while, depending on your budget, you might look at carrying a Benchmade, my daily carry is an AFCK (the original design with the liner lock). Somtimes, I'll go with a pair of Spyderco Enduras one fully serrated, one plain edged. But I prefer the AFCK; a really well thought out too.

Thanks so much for your input Anthony!

Benchmade sure does make a sweet knife.

Have you had any concerns at all with the liner lock? It does not appear to be everyone's first choice in an EDC blade...just curious as to your input :)

I haven't ever had an issue with a failure with good quality liner locks. My first carry knife (AFCK) and my current one (Emerson Commander) both are liner locks and I have abused the heck out of them trying to induce a failure, I was not successful, so I am satisfied in their quality.

I have had zero concerns with a liner lock. I use my knife everyday to open things and cut zip ties, etc. The AFCK was designed to be able to be used as a pocket stick/yawara and in that respect it works very well. It will also deploy the blade quickly when needed.

A Timberline Wortac is a good choice as well. (the smaller one) the larger blade is more like a folding pocket sword. :) It' wicked cool but kind of large in the pocket.

The small one has real nice opening action for quick deployment.

I carry that and a Delica or Endura (depending on how I feel in the morning). It's kind of like picking out what shirt to wear.

That's been my usual carry, though I'm now experimenting! It feels good in the hand and opens snoothly.

The AFCK is my every day knife. It doesn't scream "tactical folder" and is well designed and produced. As someone said above, it works quite well as a yarawa as well.

Best,

Hmmm...here's a review (http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/review/812SBT.htm) of a Mini-AFCK, and a review (http://www.zknives.com/knives/folding/benchmade/bmafckaxd2.shtml) of a regular-sized one.

I am a huge fan of the Cold Steel Scimitar. It has a 4 inch curved blade and a Ball on the punyo end for striking. Although not a Filipino design, it works very well for FMA knife techniques.

I used to carry a Scimitar ( I loved that shiv) but I lost the damn thing somehow..LOL...I am now carrying a little Kershaw Ken Onion blackout...more of a utility knife than anything.http://www.sonomacutlery.com/store/images/P/1570.jpg

It is a good blade for opening boxes and daily chores one may do with a blade and It will do if it has to be deployed in harms way, It has a good point and edge.

I also used to carry a Kershaw for a long time, the Vapor model, and as PG Mike said - I lost it. I then went to CRKT M16, but it was alittle big, so now I am with Cold Steel voyager... and it's very good! Small and unassuming, but functional and reliable enough.

Nice Kershaw.

My new daily carry is a Chris Reeves Sebenza. I like it. A lot. Mine is from 1999.

As of late, I favor the full-size Spyderco Manix, with a Spydie Delica as a backup. :)

I have a big timberline wortac that I use from time to time as I picked it up when I was stateside.. But since I lost my afck when I moved back to the isle of gilligan, the wortac is one that I swap out from day to day.. It is like a sword from which Matt said, but then again, It's a genetics thing since I carry a big sword anyway out here

I prefer to carry my Lugod, along with my electrician license. It's my sheath knife for cutting romex. http://cdn-cf.aol.com/se/smi/0201e05fca/08 Accompanied by my needle nose pliers and a
10-way screwdriver, how could they possible refute?

Hey, a needle-nose pliers isn't a bad weapon in itself! :D

I'm looking forward to seeing more. Especially the folders. My K-Bar just isn't as easy to carry about :D

A classic problem! Everyone disparages folders, it seems, but no one wants to carry around a fixed blade knife all day!

I used to carry a Spyderco Endura with the emerson wave feature (sold it to get a new one hehehe). For EDC and SD use, I highly recommend it. The emerson wave allows you to open the knife right out of your pocket. Plus its a spyderco in very good VG-10 steel, and its a lockback, which I favor for folding knives. I'm getting a benchmade griptillian soon and I'll post a comment on it as an EDC and SD option.

Sometimes I carry a CRKT M21-15, which has a 4 inch AUS8 blade. It's a liner lock with a LAWKS feature that holds the lock into position so it eliminated the chances of folding the knife by accident if you grip it too tight. It's a hefty knife but the profile makes it a great slicer. My only complaint is the edge geometry. Could be better but that's more important for knife nuts like me hehe

Having said all that, if you can pull it off legally and concealment-wise, I would recommend a fixed blade over a folding knife. No folding knife will match the strength of a fixed blade and when you have to draw it for SD, there's no fiddling with it to open. Pick a fixed blade that's relatively thin for better carry and concealment. One option would be a good neck knife like the Benchmade Instigator.

Hope that helps.

I usualy carry a $20 gerber folder with the thumb opener. It opens easy with your thumb. It is a work knife, but if I had to use it the pointy end would go into the soft stuff of the attacker well. No way the police could say its a tactical knife.

The first one I got I put it in a bench vice and locked it open so I could test it and see how much abuse it could handle. I used a 10' piece of 3/4" steel pipe slid it over the blade and applied preasure. It didnt close. good enuff for me, I wont cut my fingers off due to lock failure and its small with a pocket clip. I went back to Lowes and grabed another to carry.

Im not a longtime FMA practioner, so take it with a grain of salt. Just my opnion.

If i were a LEO or security professional and could get away with a tactical folder I would concider one of the more expensive ones, but if I loose this one its not a huge financial hit.

Yeah, I just got a Gerber (not the same model--those open handles, I dunno...) for my son when the blade I as trying to order him turned out to be sold out wherever I looked! This was just from Dick's sporting goods--it's his first, now that he's 18.

I've carried a lot of knives over the years. But mostly it's been a Spyderco Endura. The one I wear now has the Emerson Wave feature.

It doesn't have a sexy name like the Mark XIII Blac-Tac CQC Battle-Ready Eviscerator FPI-ROI (For Physical Inadequacies - Real Or Imagined ;) ). But it is sturdy, fits my hand, opens and stays opened and does everything a knife needs to do.

How is it for stabbing and cutting on people? I have no idea and hope never to find out. But once or twice just making it casually appear has reminded people with questionable intentions that they had urgent business elsewhere, like across four lanes of traffic elsewhere.

Got no complaints. Sal Glesser should live a hundred years and make millions more dollars for coming up with this knife.

I have been very happy with my Spyderco endura as well. Great knife and with them making an exact trainer to match, I can practice with the exact same knife that I carry on a regular basis. Not only will my knife ergonomics be the same but I get to practice deploying the knife in class. That is a distinct plus for me.

I am interested to see if anyone has reviewed the new folders by 5.11 tactical. They have several models, including a kerambit. From what I have heard so far they are quite well done.
